What do you guys use all your computers for?

I was looking at the pics in the networking gallery and saw some people have an assload of computers in their homes.

waht do you use them all for? Why so many?

EDIT:
1 for a firewall
3 for workstations (multiple people in the house)
2 for servers (one for internal file sharing, one for external web and FTP)
Plus a handful of older machines for screwing around with different OSes
 
I'm a sysadmin.... so I have machines for testing all sorts of stuff. Then again, when you have multiple people in your house, it's also nice to have machines so that several people can work at once.

2. server for Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, RAS, file storage, music streaming, etc.

Firewall, workstation, file server, folding box, web/ftp server, and a laptop for goofing off. That's six right?

Dads old computer for playing older games that dont run in XP (like DOS games, etc)
Moms Laptop
My Laptop

Prob gonna retire the Windows server though as it doesnt see a whole lot of use. Could even set up Samba on the Linux box to handle that functionality.

  8. ~10 other computers that really have no purpose at all

I don't run all these computers all the time....that would cost alot of money!
 
I just have 2 workstations and a file server. May get another box soon to continue messing with Linux.
 
2 workstations (XP Pro)

3 just for messing around with (older machines, but have XP and run fine)
1 currently not in use (HP with Win 98)
1 needs a hard drive (Dell Optiplex)
Over the years, I got several Gateway Pentium 75, 133, and 166 mhz computers, but they were not good for much, so I ended up taking them all apart. The other day I got a computer from my dad's work, but I couldn't install an OS on it, so I scrapped it as well.

dude, thats what encrypted and hidden folders in xp are for.
 
Used to have 6 computers in the lab, mostly PC caliber machines for playing and testing. Got a dual 2 Ghz Xeon with 3 GB of memory Netfiniity from work and gave most of my lesser PC's to family. Went virtual and gladly. Loads of workstations and servers are great for the geek quotient but unecessary for pretty much any situation, assuming you have a powerful enough machine to run VM's instead of the physical servers. Obviously there are scenarios where a physical box is required and a better fit but for labwork, VM's are an easy choice.
 
Gaming, folding, PVR/HTPC, etc....I only have 8 computers that are all over 2ghz...Is that a lot???
 
You know my wife asks me the same question every day.

We have 6 computers currently up and running in our house.
I use 3 primarily.
1 WIN XP pro machine
1 FC3 Linux running on a Dell laptop
1 SUSE 9.1 on PC

My wife, son, and daughter each have one. And I'm working on one for my youngest.
Slowly working on 2 servers, Need to get a two post rack or a cabinet for the garage to put the networking gear and servers in.

Hoping to get a Mac mini for my birthday in two weeks :D :D
 
1 xp pro network file server, alot of files and no porn of any type.
1 Xp pro machine running f@h.
1 Server 2003 standard edition gaming/folding machine. And yes it is stable as running this OS for gaming.

Please note I have a 25 user lisense for 2003 server, so the rest run the same OS. I however do not have 25 computers. The list goes on.

1 standard 2003 server running a forum for my website and it runs f@h.
1 2003 server running active directory with dns and also runs f@h.
1 hp laser jet printer mod running windows 2000, yes it is the one in the worklogs.
1 2003 server, printserver and my fathers computer.
1 pentium 3 xeon quad server running dual processors, waiting for my father to place 20amp circuit breakers in wall panel to run the machine.

1 quad xeon mod physically attached to the top of the other pentium3 quad xeon case which I am trying to get running. And both will be running f@h.

why is it that F@H is just the *perfect* excuse to dumpster dive and collect as many computers as possible hahahah
 
We have three computers running in our house.

All are just plain user machines. One FTP server on my machine, otherwise just users. A normal router brings it together.

If I had the need, I would have a web server/FTP/real router, but that just isn't there ATM.

1 laptop/gaming machine, main PC that I screw around on

3 test machines, usually Windows XP/2000 installs - testing exploits, network traffic, etc

1 sniffer laptop - suse linux
1 sniffer portable tools laptop
1 laptop - unsure what I'm doing with it so far
1 for roommate

Sun Ultra 10 - Solaris 9 - boat anchor... wants to fold but no clients avaiable...
P166MMX - Redhat 6? - another boat anchor...waste of power to run...

I got 4 computer system on my home network i don't think that is much, i am the admin of my network,well we usually use it for work, network gaming, ICS and just mucking around....... ;)

My computer and one other one is running on window XP pro with service pack2 and the other2 is window 2000pro with service pack4......These operating systems are very stable, no fault, so far so good aye :p

Boat anchor? Don't let my Sparc 10 (old style pizza box) hear you call the Ultra that, it's liable to try to kill itself. :)
 
lol, I have a Ultra 2 at work with dual 280?Mhz procs and 2GB of RAM that is still plugging along sloooowly, but hey, it works so I can't complain (much) :D

And several other skeletons which are presently unused ranging from Pentium 200mmx to a Duron 700. I need to visit the junk yard, schools won't even take those as donations anymore. hehe =)

* A test box, or an everyday box that has permissions to be allowed to do whatever on it. A box with absolutely no rules in which it may have absolutely no security whatsoever and can be infected within a second. But who cares? It's just a test box.

** All of my computers have folding on them. The two folding PC's are just what it is. Two PC's with no other additional functions but folding.
