I know its not out yet but am thinking about buying one. Anybody know if you can burn movies from your computer onto the little discs? they hold 1.8gb so as long as I shrunk a dvd down enough.... But besides that what do you guys think? thoughts, opinions.

UMD is a closed format, and Sony isn't releasing any UMD readers or writers for the PC. If you want to load movies, pictures, or music on the PSP, you have to use the Memory Stick format.

It's a nifty little handheld, and hopefully Sony will expand the handheld market with it. Convergence is a good thing, but somehow I don't see many Nintendo fans defecting over to the PSP camp--instead Sony will create new handheld gamers, just like they did with the PSX.

It could use a little more in the way of games, though. Right now, the only thing I want on it is Makai Wars, but that'll probably wind up being a PSP version of the PS2 game.

It looks great but I wont be paying $250 for it although I almost did by getting caught up in the monkey see, monkey do hype. $20-$30 for the movies $39-$40 for the games is too close to what you can pay for a full fledged DVD movie or console or PC game. I wont buy into that. If I see some good exclusives I may subscribe but for now I am passing. And yeah I am still pist they raised the price to $250 from the Asian $189 price so thats the second reason they can shove it because I would have most likely grab one for that price.

the increased 250 price tag is because it comes with stuff. it's the "value" package.

i played it this weekend; my friend got it from japan, but he only had crappy games and in japanese so i didn't really get a good feel of it. He did have the entire napolean dynamite movie on, which is pretty neat. the screen is big and bright.

The stand-alone PSP cost 19800 yen. The Value Pack cost the equivalent of $250 (I forget the exact price.)

Since we're getting the Value Pack, and not the stand-alone PSP... voila, we're paying $250. Actually, the American Value Pack has one or two items not included in the Japanese Value Pack, IIRC.

Please stop making a fool of yourself...

Please stop making a fool of yourself...? Are you a fool or just a idiot? I am just saying if the price was the same as the Asian $189 price I would buy it sooner than I would pay $250 for the pack. I can do without the headphones, cheap case and 32MB card which is a joke. I would rather have the unit without all of that so I can buy most likely a 1gig stick and a protective case with plastic window. Sheez cant people have there opinions?

Only if I can put my own movies on it will I buy one. The games are secondary to the movie viewing, though Dynasty Warriors looks pretty cool.

I think the PSP is AWESOME. But Come on Sony I won't buy into your Value package crap deals. Sony knows that the PSP is going to sell well so they are just trying to get the most money by only having a Value Pack at launch.

Honestly, I'm gonna get one. Portable GT4, Darkstalkers, and Tony Hawk in almost unadultered forms is gaming bliss. I'm sure someone will release some 12 hour battery pack for it soon, too.

The battery life is far, far too low. Particularly for a system utilizing rechargeable cells.
And considering that there are no games for it, it's a bit early to rush to the stores for this one. Add on the physical defects and you have something which is not quite what I'd call a marvel of engineering.

I am buying one on 24th, at Best Buy, Target, etc. Whoever has it, I did not pre order.

i preordered 2 from ecost... but i doubt i will get them for a while :(

they look amazing... they even have a damn joystick built in. how can you beat that!?!?!?!?

thug and gt4 look soooo good. i cannot wait.

How do you have an American game if it's not even out?

the psp is going to be HUGE. i preordered one as soon as they announced it. and, all of the real, and fake problems, with the PSP have been fixed. the battery life is in the range of 4-10 hrs depending on how you use it...and there is supposed to be a battery that you could buy later on that has 33% more capacity than the battery that comes with the PSP.

and there are 24 games launching when the PSP first comes out and there are plenty more coming down the pipe - april, may, etc.....seems like much more that what is out for the DS

News to me...so I can go to the local game store and get one tomorrow morning?
Yes. I think there are 4 or 5 games out already.

If you look at ebgames.com it gives the list of games and release date. I know mine has serveral games already.

It's sort of a bummer that UMD is a closed format, but now that I think harder about it, I can't honestly say I care. I'm not excited about all these cool little multimedia gimmicks that Sony keeps thinking of. All I care about are the games. Whether or not I get to watch Spider Man 2 on the bus is nothing compared to the ability to play Gran Turismo wherever I go. :D

You can put your own movies though the memory card, but a 1 GB Sony Memory Stick Duo costs $200. I'm not kidding. The cheapest price anywhere is $170. And you can't put much on it (and its illegal to rip DVD's...).

Not to mention the fact that the screen has a less than TV resolution.

LOL, 10 hours is when you're listening to MUSIC. 4 to 6 is for games.

Here's my personal opinion of the PSP.

It's got very, very nice graphics. HOWEVER, almost all the games are ports of the console games. There is very little for the PSP that is not available for the PS2, and often the PSP versions are slimmed down to fit on the 1.8 GB disks.

So my question is this. Why would I want the PSP, so I have to re-buy all the games I already have, to play them in a less-than-TV-resolution, when I can already play them on a much bigger screen?

The DS, on the other hand, is a completely unique experience. And the reason the PSP has more launch titles, BTW, is because it takes two seconds to port a PS2 game to PSP, while the DS out of all the 2005 announced titles only has THREE ports (Mario 64 DS, Rayman DS, Ridge Racers DS).

Furthermore, the PSP has a few serious flaws.
Firstly, I personally don't want to carry a bunch of disks with me.
Secondly, battery life. 4 to 6 hours is not enough. I get 8 to 10 on my DS.
Loading times SUCK. Compared to the INSTANT loading times on the DS, any loading times are too much ;) I use my DS in between classes, I want to pull it out and start playing, then flip it closed to standby when I'm done.
No protection for the screen means its liable to be scratched.
A full $100 more than the DS. That's a full 2/3 greater more expensive.

Now, some people might want to play console ports and deal with all the same problems (need to buy a memory card, loading times, etc), and don't mind playing by a power plug, fine, buy the DS. But for me, I have different criteria for handhelds and consoles. Consoles are for being by the power plug and having long loading times and needing memory cards, not the handhelds ;)

Now some might try to argue about Media capabilities, but the reality is, the PSP is a sucky media player. You want PSP games, buy it for the games, but DON'T buy it for media.

Firstly, the DS can have the same capabilities for cheaper.
http://image.lik-sang.com/images//large/gba-movieplayer-2nd1.jpg
GBA movie player. $25 for the player + $80 for a 1 GB CF card = $105 for the same capacity as a $170 SMS Duo stick for the PSP. CF cards are way cheaper.

You can play videos (albiet on the smaller screen), or play music.
So if you want music and videos, that works.

If you're thinking about UMD movies, stop now. The PSP's screen is still less than TV resolution. These UMD movies cost the SAME as DVD movies, without the special features, with lower resolution/quality, on a smaller screen, and can't be played on a big one. It's just not worth it.

To make the PSP into a worthwhile media center you have to buy a 1 GB Sony Memory Stick Duo for $170-$200. Then you can fit one two hour movie on the card (though its still illegal to rip DVD's, so its gonna be hard to find media unless you have a lot of trailers, or have a TV recorder for your PC ;) ).

For $450, throw in another $50 and buy a Linux laptop from Walmart, with a 20 GB hard drive (instead of 1 GB of space), DVD capability, and a much, much bigger screen. Now THAT'S for Media.

No, if you buy a PSP, get it for GAMES, not media.

I'm sticking with my DS. I may eventually buy a PSP when it hits $150 or $100 because I don't have a PS2 (my GameCube has all the console games I want, but I do miss a couple games like Burnout 3 and Star Wars Episode 3) and there are a couple titles I want. And buy then they should ship with higher capacity batteries (I hope, for their sakes). But for now, DS.

The memory stick is far less than that and a movie takes about 512mb...and you can rip as many dvds as you wish onto the psp, it's not illegal. I'm not disappointed with mine one bit.

Actually, since to rip a DVD you have to break the CSS encryption, it IS illegal. Unless you live in Canada.

I'm pretty sure you are allowed to make personal backups of DVDs.

The biggest turn off for the PSP for me is the games and the UMD.

1) The games. To be honest when I buy a handheld im not looking for a cinematic game and not some game that you sit infront for hours on end. I want a game where I can load it up and have 10 minutes of fun on the bus home from school. I think the DS is a much better handheld as far as games are concerned. I dont want to play my PS2 games on a PSP. That is one of the reasons I am choosing to get lumines as a launch game when I get my PSP. I do think PSP has some good games and will have better games on the horizon but im still not sure if they are really geared towards a portable market. I have seen a couple games where developers are starting to think outside the box with the DS and I would like them to start doing the same with the PSP. Im tired of game clone #92843. The PSP has WiFi I expect the devlopers to use it and incorprate it into games.

2) The UMD. I despise the UMD I think it is stupid to have UMD in a portable system when It would be just as easy to use flash memory. I dont want loading times and I dont want my battery life being drained down because of a UMD.

Most of the games released on the psp so far are not PORTS, they are all new versions of the game series. And even ones that are semi ports that have additions that actually might make them better then the console version like tony hawk. The reviews for the launch psp games are very positive, and seeing the games really impresses me. The quality of games at launch is amazing and the graphics are also amazing. So all those who says the psp is just about graphics, your wrong, there about great gameplay and graphics.

even if it is illegal, if your ripping your own dvd movies(backups) i dont think anybody is going to really care you are. your not selling them or stealing them in any way.

While probably not intentional, that could be deemed as a racial slur. It caught my eye and bothered me enough to say something.
