I am doing a budget build with Gigabyte EP45-UD3R and q6600. I dont want to go overboard with the video card. Even though I wont be using dx10 anytime soon not sure if an 8800GTS will be fine with 1600x1200 or if I should get a 4850/4870. I plan to keep it for years and my SLI 6800GS dont do very well with games like World At War.

Basically what card will run everything at max or near max settings with 1600x1200? FYI my old mobo north bridge fan melted and now it wont post so I guess you can say it died.

Thanks

That's the resolution I use and my 8800GTS 640MB runs just about everything fine at that res. (except for Crysis and Far Cry 2....I have to lower settings to get those to run well). So, I imagine everything from an 8800GTS and up should be fine for you. Something like a 9600GT or 9800GTX on the nVidia side would work well......or for Ati you have the 4850/4870. I would probably go with a 4850 because it seems to be the best price/performance cards plus it's slightly newer tech than those nVidia cards.

q6600 is a nice quad core.
1600x1200 is a good amount of pixels.
i say 1gb 4870 or gtx 260. or gtx 280 or 285. or 4870x2.
they're all good, depends on how much you wanna spend

HD 4850 512MB if you are on a budget, HD 4870 1GB if you can spend more. HD 4870 512MB will be faster than HD 4850 1GB but the HD 4870 can perform better with more RAM. HD 4850 doesn't benefit much from the extra RAM.

you can get by with one but your not going to max everything out. 1600 by 1200 is just shy of 2mp, 1.92mp to be exact. 1920 by 1200 is 2.3mp by comparison so your not having to push quite as many pixels but your close. that is a bite much for a 880GTS to push. a 4850 would be much better for the midrange, a 4870 512 would even be better and you should be able to find one cheap (look for used ones if you don't mind, lot of people upgrading right now with the 4870X2 below 400)

Other than Crysis I really only had to consider an upgrade to my 8800GTS512 when I went from 1600x1200 on CRT to 1920x1200 on LCD. I upgraded to a GTX260 and all is well again (as much as can be expected from Crysis, anyways).

Sooo. You can probably do lots of great 16x12 gaming on any of the G92s, that might make a 512M 8800GT best bank/buck in the green side of things.
