What board can I get that'll accept Q8400&DDR3 RAMs?

Have a lot of older chipsets running Q8400 quadcore and DDR3 RAM but the motherboard does not have built-in AHCI, which is a bummer for trying to add SSD into the mix. But the Q8400 and DDR3 are all still pretty powerful enough for my day to day use. so my question is:

Q do they have newer boards with AHCI, USB3, etc. that will accept this older Yorkfield CPU? http://ark.intel.com/products/38512/intel-core2-quad-processor-q8400-4m-cache-2_66-ghz-1333-mhz-fsb and DDR3 RAMs?

I've been out of the game (pun intended) for a few years, just coming back to re-up some my older hardware

edit: I do not want to upgrade to the i3,5 or 7core series. just wanna replace the motherboard but hoping to get USB3 and AHCI.

You are definitely not getting USB3 without an additional addon card. USB3.0 spec came out during the LGA1366/1156 days, 775 was long dead and no one was making new boards.

As for RAID, you need to find a board with the ICH9R or ICH10R southbridge (these support RAID and AHCI).

If your current motherboard supports ddr3 it most certainly supports AHCI. I had a P35 chipset motherboard that only did DDR2 and it had AHCI.

Anyway if I'm wrong, something like the Asus P5Q3 would do what you want.

Maybe something like this?

That would be bottlenecked by the PCI-E x1 lane. Maybe not as bad as the SATA2 southbridge, but bottlenecked none the less. If you're going to get a SATA3 card, get one with atleast x2 or x4. USB 3 will also need to be an add on card.

Not true. G41/G31 boards that took DDR3 had ICH7, which didn't support AHCI.

I picked that simply for the sake of ultimate compatibility, seeing as we don't have specifics on what motherboard(s) JediFonger is using, so there may be a limitation depending on which MoBo(s) is being used.

here's my current board:
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5G41M_LX/#specifications

as you can see AHCI is not part of it. i also have numerous older dells OptiPlex380s which ran:
http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/optix/en/optiplex-380-tech-guide.pdf
and that also didn't have AHCI. like i said i've been out of the game since before SSDs were common =P. just looking for some updating using the components i have. i know it's a PITA, but it would be cheaper on me, i think.

thanks for the finds! i'll check them out!

hmmm yeah it's difficult maybe someone on these forums have some. thanks!

That board is DDR2. You SURE you have DDR3?

yeah you wont get usb3, out the question, but usb3 pci-e cards are cheap.

regarding ssd and ahci, very likely any high end board of that era can do it, but I would mod the bios so it has newer intel raid/achi firmware.

the amd am2 system I have running in my other room now can do ahci and thats from the ddr2 era. I would find it bizzare your system cant but its possible it may be labelled different in bios, it might be just under sata mode.

Nope. Most G41/G31 boards used ICH7, which never had any AHCI functionality.

I just had a look to confirm, it seems ICH7R has AHCI but not ICH7 (non raid).

So non functionality I think would be bios/driver dependent.

seems even ICH6 can use it.

* Intel® 82801GHM I/O Controller Hub (ICH7MDH) - RAID only
* Intel® 82801GBM I/O Controller Hub (ICH7M) - AHCI only
* Intel® 82801GR I/O Controller Hub (ICH7R) - RAID and AHCI
* Intel® 82801GH I/O Controller Hub (ICH7DH) - RAID and AHCI
* Intel® 82801FR I/O Controller Hub (ICH6R) - RAID and AHCI
* Intel® 82801FBM I/O Controller Hub (ICH6M) - AHCI only

Most G41/G31 board use ICH7, like I've repeated over and over. It doesn't support AHCI.

sorry i have the P5G41T-M LX V2 which added DDR3 support.

meanwhile, i actually got an OptiPlex755, which is great because i can make use of the quadcore 8400s and i have a ton of DDR2 lying around. so i'm allset.

i'll use the DDR3 for other systems. Thanks guys! BTW OptiPlex755 supports AHCI so that'll hold me over until TNG-style technology comes along and we will no longer use these crude computer devices lolz ;P

This actually is such a board which did exist, but its long gone now unfortunately
