I know it's polarizing, but I found Heavy Rain to be a great experience and of course depressing for a number of reasons. I actually really like the game play. There was a lot put into it. The only fault it has is the lack of replay value (but the free DLC does add on, it's too bad all of the parts were never completed. Also if you're weird and hardcore, one can play it again and again in order to practice at a perfect game). Still, if you have a PS3 around and you haven't played it, it's probably worth picking up used on eBay for $6 or something just to have the experience.

Final Fantasy X. It represented my transition from childhood to manhood. By learning and using critical thinking for parts like themes, conflicts, character development, and ect, I looked at video games in a different light. It felt good to look at the world in a new view.

Will second the Siberia series. There just something melancholic about the atmosphere.

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture was pretty incredible, and incredibly sad.

Nothing compares to Shadows of the Colossus.

As I recall, the ending of Assassin's Creed: Unity is pretty sad. At least, it didn't really feel like winning.

That's actually the beginning of the game. It gets worse from there.

I know it was mentioned but definitely Soma. Started it up a while ago and just picked up where I left off. It is definitely a sad story! And scary as fuck!

Just going to add that I got This War of Mine after reading this thread and so glad I did. Love the game! I'm on day 18 right now. I only lost pavil so far which passed me off. Such a cool game. Definitely a sad one too

Tell me about it. I just started playing this game. Got pretty far along (day 20 something) and one character died while scavenging. The other two were starving and sick with no food, and no way to get food. What a downer.

    Great game though!

    That Dragon, Cancer.

I haven't played it myself but the idea is sad on its own. It's about a toddler with terminal cancer.

I'd second Brothers and Ori, if you're looking for something actually sad and not just dark.

Otherwise, I wouldn't say I've played much that's sad in the true sense of the word. Maybe some culturally sad games, dystopias and the like. However, this type of setting usually pulls me in, and puts me into fight the oppression mode, so they don't illicit a sad tone really. :D

Also have to agree with everyone who's mentioned SOMA.

I haven't played the game yet, even though I had it in my library, but what you write worries me. I hope it's not that kind of a game that sets you up to fail, with no way of avoiding it. I hate that shit.

    It's a typical survival game.

Once you get the in's and out's on how to effectively run your base, it's pretty difficult to lose a member of your party.

I'll add Life is Strange as well.
That game made me quite depressed and I'm not the type who is emotional or gets depressed easily.
    10/10 would feel depressed again.

For what reasons would you classify them as sad? (Will give the first one a go if there is a good reason to it).

Mass Effect 3 made me sad for two different reasons.

    1. The true paragon path ends with your death.
    2. Bioware points still make me cry.

FFVI, in particular the scenes with Celes... any other games that portray torture/rape, suicide, and loss of love in such a poetic manner like this one?

I also loved it... except the last "boss"... what other games make you feel sad to as you take down supposedly innocent creatures? Or did you find it sad for some other reason?

Jesus christ. Against my better judgement I watched the first 10 seconds of the trailer on Steam. With kids I couldn't handle that.
