Slacker: Internet radio
ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL. I've discovered soooo many lovely bands I would have missed otherwise.
Pandora and Last.FM both have good apps as well.
Robo Defense - very addictive
hell yes
I played the demo version and wasn't impressed at all. Is the full version very different?
im surprised about the apps for android. Seems lacking. =)

Lacking 10,000 fart apps is a plus in my book
Wave Secure - Track your phone and disable it if it is lost or stolen. I installed back when it was in beta so I have it for free for life. I have another app like this installed too but I can't remember what it is called since it hides itself so it can't be disabled by a thief.

Advanced Task Killer - necessity on an Android device
The only thing necessary about a task killer is that you uninstall it. They are bad for a bunch of reasons. At worst, they cause problems, break things, corrupt data, and slow down the phone. At best, they don't do anything at all. In generally, they help drain the battery and slightly slow down the phone.
Robo Defense - Addictive game, first I installed back in Dec.
Wings of Steel demo - Awesome WWII (play as Japs though) aerial combat game, plays very well on the Droid.
Aura - Eve Online Skill Tracker, the best EveMon like App for Eve players there is and it is updated all the time with improvements.
Air Control - very addictive control tower land the plans type game.
Aldiko - ebook reader, tons of free books too and you can import your own.
Where - useful app for finding nearby stuff, also use Yellowbook and Urbanspoon for restaurants
Astro File Manager - create backups of your apps and more.
Airhorn - loud horns, fun to mess with people, nothing more. I tell people I have an app that lets me sound my hornblasters.com horns I have installed in my truck from my phone and then scare them with it.

Antivirus - found a trojan in an app as soon as i installed it (un-installed the suspect app too) and has stopped another app from installing one as well.

Power Manager - Controll brightness more easily than the 25% increments the system lets you do. Can adjust settings for different battery levels too. I think the newest update broke it for a lot of people but I didn't upgrade. That is the first rule of upgrading, let others try it first and then read their comments. That and having backups with Astro so you can restore them if they do break or the developer puts in obnoxious ads to a once great ad-free app.
I have lots of other cool apps but these are my favorites and the ones I recommend to at least try.
Um what? I'm on the Incredible and this app has single handley given me hours more battery use.
How do you make the backups of your apps using the astro file manager?
You can, but it's on an app by app basis. If you really want good backup, go for Titanium Backup. It allows for batch backup and restore of apps, their associated data, system data, app market links (so you'll get update notifications from the market), etc. It's really excellent.
But either way I believe the app will still be running(hardly using resources) in the background for a set amount of time and then Android will kill the app. I'm not sure how long that takes. But I'm assuming its about an hour or less.

In short, Android knows how to manage its resources much better than you do, so let it.
Then the task killer is preventing programs from doing what you've told them to do, like update in the background. In which case, just tell those programs to not update in the background. Or it hasn't improved your battery life at all, and any gains you've seen are the result of changes in your phone usage (or it's all in your head).
I think you're talking about MOBILE DEFENSE. It's works great and it's free right now, but it's going to become a fee-based service later.

Couldn't have said it better kllrnohj.

Anti-virus? Seriously? For my phone? I'm about to get an EVO and didn't think I would need an anti-virus.
