I have a P4 550 3.4GHz and now I want to go AMD and overclock it. I will get an ASUS SLI motherboard and 2Gigs of ram. What CPU should I get to overclock with, and also what ram should I use? I want to do this till the 3800+ X2 comes out and then I will upgrade. I am also going to water cool this setup.
I was thinking a 3000+ or 3200+. Thanks in advance.

if you want to overclock, don't get the asus.. here's what i would get:

dfi nf4 sli-dr

2x1024mb crucial ballistix. yes, it's expensive, but it's the only 1gb ram that consistantly does >270mhz from what i've seen

but, since ram speed has next to no effect on performance for a64, i would recommend the value varient. i have a stick that can do 250mhz at 3-3-3

3000+ venice.. sell later and get a 3800+ X2

Took the words out of my mouth! I second this....Mobo has good voltage settings and the Venice core "should" prove a good overclocker. If you want more on the RAM side...maybe look at the new Mushkin Red Line or OCZ's new stuff.

Thanks for all the info. Is there any ram that will be close but not so expensive? Also is the DFI board better than the new ABit SLI board? Thanks again.

These are pretty much the same suggestions that I got when i asked in my thread yesterday. I have to agree with pretty much everything theyt said. The 3000+ now and upgrade when the dual cores drop way down in price. I dont know much about RAM, so go with what the guys were suggesting here, looks like good stuff.

i think my 4400 and asus board work very well together. it may not be AS overclockable as the DFi, but it certainly stable @ 2.8 Ghz. i got it to 2.8 and ran 3Dmark05 and did a few hours of BF2 with no hang ups. i lowered it back down to 2.6Ghz since. it is so fast now, i don't really NEED any more power, i was just seeing what i could do with it. if you are looking to O/C more than this, than perhaps the DFI is what you need. but my rig can handle any thing i have come across so far with lots of room to spare. and Eclipse is spot on about the Crucial Ballistix! it is more expensive, but you get what you pay for. mine ROCKS! corsair XMS did me right for a long time, but im now a crucial buyer from now on!

o/t, but i'm glad to hear this. i have <3'ed crucial for many moons. now that 1gb is important, it's nice to see them getting a bigger foothold, even if probably very brief, in the enthusiast market

Ok, I'm going to get a DFI nf4 ultra-D, I'm going to go cheap here because I don't see myself ever buying 2 video cards, needing the 4 extra sata, or using the 2nd NIC. I'm probably going to get a 7800 GTX though. And I'm going to use my existing 2x512 Corsair RAM for now, may go 2x1024 down the road.

I know I want a Venice. And I'll OC somewhat, not hella hardcore. So my 2 questions are this, why the 3000+ over the 3200+, you'll get the same speeds out of it? And how well does it do with the stock HSF vs something else, like a Thermalright XP-120 or Zalman CNPS-770Cu 120mm HSF? Is the stock "good enough" and quiet enough if I'm not going crazy? Ok, that's hard to define, I'd like to get at least 3800+ numbers out of it, and I like quiet too, if that tips towards a 3rd party HSF.

edit: yawn, ok stayed up real late and read through the past month, so I've pretty much answered my questions, I'm going to spring for the 3200 and get a 3rd party hsf. Leaning towards the xp-90, because I've been a thermalright user for several systems now. The 120 might fit, but I'll play it safe. Ok, changed my mind, going for the 3000+, spending too much money as it is already, wheeee.
