Western Digital Time-Limited Error Recovery (TLER) with RAID and SE, SE16, GP Models

Which affordable 2To drive should I get in order to build a RAID5 for my home server?
Thanks
(RE is more than twice the price of GP here! :/ )

if your original drive allowed TLER your RMA will allow TLER. I have received a few and one of my 1.5TB that did NOT allow TLER came back NOT allowing TLER. The other 5 or so allowed TLER since they originally did.

I'm sorry this is incorrect..or it was as of about 2 months ago..

I RMA'd a WD10EADS that allowed TLER and received a replacement that didn't allow TLER.. after fighting with WD about a month they replaced all 5 of my drives with RE series drives..

can anyone provide a link as to where one might download the wdidle?

thanks treadstone,

i can confirm wdtler and wdidle ran successfully for me on WD20EADS-00S2B0 and WD20EADS-00R6B0 on both 01.00A01 and 04.05G04 firmwares
TLER is now on and set to 7 seconds
IDLE is set to disabled

i found these tools at these locations:

but here is my AMCC log 3ware 9560SE, the settings above were applied just after 7, so now i'm confused as to what the issue might be, do i have a failing drive?

Resurrection from the dead!

I made the "mistake" of buying 5 WD20EARS drives for my non-mission critical RAID setup using an LSI 8408e controller. Unfortunately I found, post factum, that TLER is not something I can enable on these puppies right off the bat...

Thus:

1. Is there ANYTHING that would enable it? Custom firmware? Customer utility?
2. If I do replace them, I can get them changed to WD20EADS drives - do all firmware support TLER?
3. Different drive maybe then?

Thanks!!!!

Show smartctl -a output for this drive.

smartctl -d 3ware,0 -a /dev/twa0

Hi
I know this is too late , but i just wonder is TLER is required when i do a software raid like windows raid . as i got WD20EARS which is TLER not supported so i changed from my intel RAID MOBO to Windows Software Raid 5 hoping that TLER is not reuired in SOFT Raid so my HD will not dropped if they take much time to repair the Bad Sectors
what do you think?

Hi,
I would like to buy three new WD 2TB HDD and connect them to an Adaptec 5805 RAID controller running RAID 5.
Can be enable TLER on Caviar Black WD2001FASS / WD2002FAEX ?

Buy Hitachi 7K2000 or 7K3000 and be done with it, or, if you want TLER for some reason(?) buy enterprise disk drives. TLER is not needed for normal drives, e.g. Hitachi, which work fine with or without RAID.

I fear the possible drop-out of the HDD from the array.
Are the Caviar Black HDD sensitive to these issue?
I don't want to risk it, otherwise I take the enterprise HDD.

Unfortunately the Deskstar only have two years warranty as opposed to five of the Caviar Black.

If you are going to put the disks on a RAID controller and don't want to worry about what will work, what will not, search the raid manufacturer's website and find what it states it is compatible with and buy those drives.

Also the 7k3000 Hitachi's have 3 year warranty.

Has anyone enabled TLER on Western Digital WDBAAY0020HNC drives?
I've heard they are the same as the WD20EADS, can anyone confirm this?

Does anyone know the cutoff manufacture date for when Western Digital disabled the ability for us to enable TLER on the WD20EADS?

this thread just keeps coming back...

word to the wise: Don't buy any WD green drive with the expectation of running TLER.

Even if you manage to get one that still allows you to enable it, the first time you have to RMA one chances are you're going to get a non TLER capable drive back.

If you need TLER buy the WD RE series drives or use more Raid-friendly drives from Samsung or Hitatchi.

Most WD desktop drives manufactured after September 2009 have TLER permanently disabled (or totally unsupported).

Is that to say that one can buy a Caviar Black drive and expect to run TLER? Looking to upgrade my array, and while I'm prepared to buy the RE4 drives, if I could save $50ish/drive, I'd definitely prefer to just buy the consumer drives (I don't really need enterprise level support)

If not, has there been any progress on a firmware hack or anything? It really wouldn't surprise me if the RE4 and equivalent caviar blacks have identical hardware. I just don't know of any firmware dumping and flashing utilities though (except for the tools used to modify the scorpio drives for use in the 360).

I understand this is an old post, but it is really help.

I have two WD green 1T have been used for more than two years and after those purchase, I bought a Hitachi 1T HDS721010CLA332 and a Samsung HD103SJ. Finally I feel I can make a Raid5 with these four 1T hard drives on the new built system with Asus MB P8P67LE, which has Intel® P67(B3) chipset with 4 SATA 3Gb/s ports. This raid I will just use to back up some big files.

Before I began with my work, I noticed Green is not good for Raid usage. Thanks for this post which give me the detail information how I can fix it and also give me the confidence to use them safety. I enabled the TLER of those WD green already, which have the model number like below..

WDC WD10EADS-00M2B0
WDC WD10EADS-65L5B1

But I noticed an other problem, the WD Greens I have are different with 2-platter drive and 3-platter drive separately. When I was doing the research, I found people have trouble with using them on some linux based NSA. And looks like they need use WDIDLE3.exe to fix that, but no one confirmed it.

Could somebody give me some suggestion? Thanks a lot.

Why use RAID for backup? With all of the potential issues you might be shooting yourself in the foot.

I do not understand, I feel there are almost no chance with two disk damage at the same time. So I just need to put in another one when I got error report and keep the files a little more reliable.

That's right ... except when both of your WD drives drop from RAID5 (for TLER, WDIDLE or some other reason) and you lose ALL of the data.
The way I think about this (see if it makes sense to you): you need backup only when you lost data in your main system (which, I hope is a rare event). So, the chance of you needing backup and your backup being broken (even if it's a single disk or a simple set of disks, not RAID) is very small already. Most enterprises (that, one would hope, put some thought into how they do it) don't use RAID for backup (in fact many use tape storage for large volumes).

At my last company, we used RAID6 for live backup, and tape for archiving those backups. :D

I don't have any of the non TLER-capable drives, but I think I may be onto something.

I installed the RE3 firmware included in this package from dell onto one of my Caviar Blacks - the firmware version updated and TLER was automatically set to 8s read and white. My other CBs didn't successfully update, but they didn't brick either. There's quite a few WD firmwares in that package; I don't know what the RE equivalent of the WD20EADS drive is, but it may be in there. I have more details about the flashing process in this thread: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1660270
