This thing would be kinda cool with a few improvements like room for triple monitors and venting the PC out the back of the box. Thanks to Izzy for the link.

I can see something like this being used if the oculus rift goes mainstream enough. If you're going into virtual reality and blocking out many of your senses, wouldn't you feel better if you knew you were in some kind of enclosed space? Kinda like in minority report.

Does it have a ventilation fan at the bottom? You would end up with some mean headaches considering CO2 doesn't float up like O2.

I actually converted a mid-sized closet into a mini-gaming room once (until I needed the closet space :D ) It was actually pretty cool. I had a comfortable chair though, a 24" monitor mounted to the wall, and built a comfortable keyboard and mouse space. I had a pair of studio monitors and a pair of good headphones as well in it. There was also enough to slide back a bit for playing on a game pad. The cool thing was it was dark, isolated, and was perfect to play some of the creepier games. I still prefer the couch and 65" TV for gamepad games, and my real desk for M+KB games, but it was cool for a while. I don't know about having a stand-alone chamber though like the one in the news-post. One of the main features of my closet was that it was out of the way.

I got nauseous just looking at it, but I bet there is a market. You could even force people to sit in it watching Miley Cyrus music videos in an endless loop for a punishment if it weren't for that "cruel and unusual" clause...

I prefer a more open workspace. I'm saving my pennies for one of these.

There's been a picture going around the internet almost the last TWENTY years of a guy who built one of these himself to escape into because he had a noisy family, just a giant wood box with a door on it

It needs a toilet for a seat, a refrigerator, and a slot big enough to pass a pizza box through. Plus a trash chute.

Ok, I am probably putting myself into the lunatic-fringe stratosphere of nerdness, but I built something similar in my basement this winter.

pWDceSv.jpg

It's unfinished in that picture. Fully enclosed except for the door. It's 64"x72" inside, big enough for 3x24" monitors (though I might just put a big TV in there). It has a Denon receiver with 5.1 sound, a heater, carpeting on the inside walls, a leather seat from a 2004 Accord, and lighting. It was designed as a simulator box, for flight and driving sims, though it does work well for any kind of gaming or movie watching. I can totally see a married guy with kids building one to get away. I, of course am single, though my kid does think it's the coolest thing ever.

This winter was brutal so it made for a good project. It's in a constant state of flux/construction, haven't been working on it much lately, when spring arrives I move to the garage and shift my focus to motorcycles and other outdoor activities.

"Invention" ???

Step one: Build a time machine
Step two: Go 25 years into the past
Step three: Invent your pod before the Tesla II BattleTech pod.

What ............ You guys haven't heard or seen a gaming pod? That's all this is. Do a quick search on Google for "Gaming Pod" and you will see tons of pics. Some are open, some are closed.

It lets you focus on games, especially sims without the distraction of your house-hold environment.

I had one for my Amiga back in the day and it was cool.

I just spent 15 mins trying to find one I saw awhile back but no luck. It was pretty massive, built in 5000btu AC w/ remote, exhaust fans, Eyefinity 27" monitors, built in mini fridge, 5.1 surround sound, dome top security camera, sound insulation and could be locked from the inside. It was about as big as a car I think and sat inside his 3 car garage.

The guy had a dedicated 30amp circuit put in.

Oh forgot it had a battery backup in it as well, led lighting, drink holders, and some shelves.

Serious question...
Why?
Couldn't you just build a room the same dimensions so you have the head room? Or do you intend to move it a lot. (Not sure how you would move something that large..)

Touche salesman.

Yeah, you could. That's kinda how my closet setup was. Full height, but small space, with the ergonomics designed around the small space. It was nice to be able to escape the rest of the house if I really wanted to get into the game. In the end though, the novelty wore off, and now I sit at a desk or the couch when I want to play.

Good question, and I don't have a good answer for you other than it's fucking cold in Wisconsin and there is very little to do in the winter. Mostly because I felt like it, I own the house, and have plenty of extra room (this is in my basement). It was designed to be "cozy", and to block out distractions. It's also designed it to be disassembled if I ever do move, though at that point I would probably just give it away. If I ever did need to move it a few feet it could be put on dollies.

I keep hearing the Comic Store Guy's voice saying "I have specifically instructed you to NOT disturb me while I am inside my Fortress of Solitude.

I can understand that someone would want this for studying... but I'm sure masturbation would soon take hold and you would never get any work done.

"It was designed as a simulator box, for flight and driving sims"

Seems pretty straightforward to me.

 Those glass shelves on the left are a serious hazard. Every gamer knows you need plenty of elbow room with which to flail your arms wildly while rage-quitting from an online session.
