Ookay.. Don't ask, but I need to do something that will yield my win2k laptop unbootable. As in, it will fail to boot. This happened a while back when \winnt\system32\config\system got corrupted, but I can't access that file when windows is running. Anything I can do that will hose the box, but is repairable later? Its kind of a long story why, but I need to be able to do this asap.

Boot into recovery console

Rename 'c:\Windows\system32\config\system' to 'system.old or whatever. Windows will be rendered unbootable then.

I also take no responsibility for whatever you're scheming.

Backup the boot.ini to a floppy in the root DIR (C:), and then delete/rename it.

Works a charm.
