LOL, at least he's honest unlike other companies that try to blame everything else like leaked alphas and stolen code.

This comment actually bothered me, and concerns me.

So he is saying any time a game is transfered from one person to another they orginial author should be paid? As much as I hate gamestop they should not have to pay royalites for buying and selling used games.

A new threat to our industry is resells, something that was not a factor only three years ago. Gamestop is the biggest offender, and makes over a billion dollars a year on resells now – with none of that going to the publishers or studios that created these games. This is a serious blow for content creators, and will only make it harder and harder for original IP to be given any sort of a chance in the future.

Even if it comes out later this year I doubt an Unreal 2 engine would hold a candle to any games powered by Cryengine2.

And that's exactly why they are going to re-start all over with CryEngine 2 :)

It's a difficult problem. I mean, books and movie can retain their value rather well. Once a book is paperback, it will alway sell for about $10, the used price is based more on the age of the book as opposed to when it was originally written. New copies of Dune, for example, are still being printed off and purchased to this day. Popular books rarely go out of print, and usually stay at full price once its gone paperback. The same goes for movies, not to mention all the re-releases which perpetually bump the DVD price back up to $20, or higher now if you go HD.

Tell me one game that is over 20 years old that is still be published? Much less for something even remotely close to full price, or even something close to a "discount" price of $20. After a year, maybe 2, for most games its clearance price, less than $10, just to get rid of it already. Its no longer being published. This means games have a very, very narrow window of opportunity to make money.

Now personally I think the answer is to make games with more of a timeless quality to them in the same way books and movies have, and not bitch and moan about how they are getting cheated out of money they deserve. I mean look at games like Starcraft, Diablo 2, and WoW. Love them or hate them, people still play the hell out of them, and buy new copies.

seemingly the engine has been totally rewritten at least once. I think all that's left is the unreal scripting language.

Too much engine development and not enought game development these days.

Screw that. I don't need HDR, blur effect and all those new effects.

Half-life 2 was MORE than enough quality graphics for me.

"Seemingly", "at least", "I think"

Contestant: Terms associated with anything DNF?
Alex Trebek: That's correct!

That was a cool interview. I just hope they pay the guy they stole the voice from initially. Err I can't remember his name right now. If they do that and get him to offically voice DNF then I will probably buy it and NOT a used copy. ;)

While I agree with your points, The authors don't get royalites for the resale of their books.

The root of the problem is that 99% of games made are just trash. Only the elite 1% survive to stand the test of time.

I'm sure you don't mean collections BUT I think some games are timeless regardless of graphics. Otherwise atari and capcom wouldnt have their game collection discs out every year for the handhelds. Eitherway I think it deserves to be mentioned.

There are games out there well over 10 years old that are still being played as well regardless of what new comes out.
Diablo 1 and 2
StarCraft (not 100% sure today but I have seen brand new boxes at brick and mortar stores )
War Craft series ( you can still by the battle chest brand new )
Couter Strike
Tribes 1
Quake 3

My only point is not ALL games have a narrow window to make money in.

I just never seen it that way before. Why would you have to make lol any easier or harder to type in this case? Sorry about going off topic.

This comment actually bothered me, and concerns me.

So he is saying any time a game is transfered from one person to another they orginial author should be paid? As much as I hate gamestop they should not have to pay royalites for buying and selling used games.

QFT. The fact that he's so ignorant of the first sale doctrine and the basis of the entire used game/cd/movie industry makes me sick.

I should have to pay IKEA when I sell my old coffee table.

This moron needs to stfu.

What is sad about this is that Gamestop/EB doesn't resell PC titles anymore.

So at the same time publishers are going to consoles because of "piracy" they are moving away from the only medium where they are less likely to lose money to reselling.

^^^^Too true... My daughter ONLY buys resells, when she buys a console game at all.. Most console games are a weekend rental for her, at best.. Even the resells she buys get resold after awhile in most cases.. Making it even worse for the devs/pubs and better, of course, for eb/gamestop and the consumers..

OT, I will buy DNF just for the sake of having a copy of the most delayed video game ever made..

The probally dont do resells due to the "Piracy" concerns.

I used to remember 5 or 6 years ago hitting the used PC games every damn weekend. Used to be able to score awsome deals, and a lot of times getting strategy guides with the games dirt cheap.

make a game that is truely good and gamers will never put the thing down.

tetris - still being played today and makes it mark on almost every console.

Starcraft, this is still a SUPER popular game in the asian countries and is still a great game to pick up even now as there are still people on B.Net and probalby will always be people. Same goes with Diablo 2 and probalby Warcraft III

Haha... Since the beginning of production I've,

1. Gone through puberty.
2. Saw my first nudey magazine.
3. Gone through the entire school system. (minus 1st grade)
4. Been through 4 computers.
5. Lost my virginity.
6. Broken 5 bones. (Motorcross, Football, Wrestling)
7. And played through Half-life 2. Which is a game that proves in itself that the nukem team is completely a cluster f*ck.

WHat I dont get is how do they stay funded?

I understand it's gone through different people but man. At what point do they say screw it cut our losses. I can't see anyone making money especially after the time it's taken to get this far......how ever far they really are.

I laughed when I saw the comments about possibly bringing the game to various console platforms. IF they ever finish DNF they better just give the console porting job over to another team, otherwise console gamers will have to wait another 10 years... maybe more, because they'll be half done on one console when the next-gen consoles will release. :D

Wow, i've never thought of that until I read that quote. That's crazy. They are seriously losing revenue.

2 & 5 are the same, and it doesn't count! ;)

DNF better be good. Or heads will roll. I like older games. I like DOSBox just to play a lot of them (Leisure Suit Larry, Day of the Tentacle). Hell, if I could, I would BUY old Commodore 64 games that I used to play all the time. Now, it's just emulators bringing back old memories. I have the disks SOMEWHERE... :)

I'd like to point out that NASA has planned, built, launched, flown, and landed a probe on Mars in the time DNF has been in development. Kinda puts things in perspective.

But the people at NASA are Rocket Scientists.
