Searched Google a few times, but I wasn't able to find info on the WD SN720 m.2 nvme SSD. Anyone have insight if it's dramless/HMB or what controller it uses? Seems to be a server or OEM drive. Thanks!
It's a tri-core design that somewhat resembles Samsung's older UAX/UBX controllers - one core for host, one for reads, one for writes. Samsung has since gone from Cortex-R4 to Cortex-R5 and five cores (two each for reads and writes) and the SN720's controller is also R5-based. It likely borrows some IP from Phison (through WD's Toshiba partnership) but in any case is powerful and efficient, 8-channel with DRAM.
The SN700 was the OEM version of the original Black (2018) and there's also a SN730 which is the SN720 with 96L/BiCS4 (also found on the SN550, based on the 64L SN520 as is the SN500).
