dammit.. I dont need it but I got one anyway.

What are you guys using this for?

Mine was going into my Plex server but the controllers on the 990FX board I have doesn't like the 8TB drive, so I put it into my gaming machine to hold a few porn vids, lol

Oh, my board is in an Intel Chassis with a Hotswap bay, it could be the bay that doesn't like the 8TB drive,

I'm tried of being out of space... fuck it, in for two. I'll be picking them up shortly.

Update: Woot, both Thailand drives. Shucked the first one in a matter if minutes with some old gift cards. Worked perfectly. Big thanks to whoever figured that out.

Now to get it installed and check it.

Just picked two up plus I get 5% back via the BB visa which almost covers the 7% sales tax.

Well I guess i'm in for one more...this makes 6.
WTH am I going to do with all this space there is only so much midget clown porn availble.

Damnit I still have the nine from last time they hit 160 tested and sitting in a box. Really need to get around to figuring out how I'm going to add then to my server.

Thanks.. grabbed another!

Consolidating my home setup to one box to make things more presentable to sell the house and was getting worried about storing everything on the single drive I had. I will still have all my data up to yesterday on the old gear, but it will be in storage and I'm sure the family will add more stuff between now and whenever the house sells that could be lost in the meantime.

Seems like these go on sale pretty often. Hopefully another round comes up soon. I need to replace the 3TB drives in my Synology NAS that's pretty packed full. It's only my backup target, so I can be patient, but I'd rather not have to rsync a ton of data if I don't have to. Swapping the drives will take long enough as-is... though it might be faster to just destory the volume, build a new one, and rsync everything over :D

Saw a thread on Reddit datahoarder saying that prices will be back down to $169 this week.

Yup, price back down to $169.99. I had been waiting for the price to drop again. Just bought two through the website for store pickup tomorrow.

Dang, that's nice. I'm not yet needing them - I figure I can easily hold out until Black Friday, so hopefully they'll go on sale again, or be on sale at BF. Then I can pick up enough to expand my backup NAS enough to actuall backup the primary NAS completely.

anyone else having problems with older chipsets not recognizing these? My MSI GD65 z77a doesn't see shit.

Just ordered 2 of these, whats the best way to test them before I remove them from the enclosures? What do you guys do with the enclosures?

I think you can use Crap Cleaner, but I can't remember now (and I"m off to bed). I know it took me a day or so to run the test with whatever s/w I used.

it's back up to $169.99. Not sure If I want another. Just downloaded 160gig of pr0n and I still have plenty :D

Finally pulled the trigger on 2. Thanks OP and anyone else for keeping this updated!

I did an advanced (3-pass) overwrite with ccleaner (tools -> drive wiper) then ran a check with stablebit scanner

Why 3 passes? I just downloaded this tool and it says it will take a day an 1/2 to execute this on the 8tb drive.

Some strange performance:
First I did this:
8TB drives by glamisduner, on Flickr

Shows F drive as much much slower

Yet their performance according to stablebit is about the same.

Wiping the drives
8TB drives2 by glamisduner, on Flickr

Then I realized I is going faster possibly because I screwed up and set it to only clean free space, and only one pass oops, So I re-started it.

8TB drives3 by glamisduner, on Flickr

Now I is much much much much slower than F?

edit: Started wiping the other drive too, but it says it will only take 12 hours.

Why is one drive so much slower than the other one?

I swapped USB ports and same results.... Is one of the drives bad?

I dunno. I just figured more writes over every sector will have a better chance at finding bad sectors.

I can't recall how long it took on mine, but I want to say around 24hrs.
Did you select entire drive on both disks? or free space only on either of them?
Not sure what else would cause that much difference in time; other than USB2 vs USB3.

I just edited my post above,, Maybe my USB3 buss is just saturated? But then why was it going so much faster a moment ago?

I do 2 passes with HD Sentinel because a bunch of other members do it and recommended it

Maybe try activekilldisk or a diff program. These drives take about 18 hours to wipe and 2 of them shouldn't saturate the bus on your mobo.

I keep holding out... I'd need 7-8 of these to replace my drives in my NAS. Then I could sell my drives in my NAS to cover most of the cost of these....

Well, the lowest they were was $159... right? And that wasn't frequent either. I'd be buying them now. Or trying to get an online store to price match BB so that you could avoid sales tax.

B&H photo is the only one that I know of that doesn't charge sales tax.
