WD Easystore External Discussion

I just got mine, just want to comment on how crappy they were packed with almost no packing material, practically loose in the box.
The one I received was a bubble wrap envelope about four times larger than the drive box. I wish it would have been in another box. At least that was some protection.
 
Does anyone have a HGST He8 drive that was actually manufactured in China? It seems Thailand is the only place HGST 8TB He8 drives were manufactured.
 
Any modern spinning rust drive that is not running can handle high amounts of G's. In retail packing along with being inside of an enclosure is probably enough protection to safely handle most airplane crashes so I wouldn't be concerned about receiving these in skimpy envelopes or loose in a box.
 
Being a doughnut man myself, would those be Dunkin or non-Dunkin doughnuts?

More likely their factory in Bang Pa-In. The corporate office in Prachin Buri doesn't have any clean rooms except for the bathroom which doesn't come close to the required ISO standard needed.

Guess you should inform HGST of that? WD is the one who has locations in Bang Pa-In, not HGST as the label on that drive shows.

No idea what you are talking about, it's an He8 drive listed as Thailand, so? Not really sure where you are going with that.

And I know the drive is a relabel, I pointed that out way back in their thread about the early drives still having both labels.

I think we should expect differences between the HGST He8's from Thailand and these "RED"s from China. I'm sure we'll find out soon enough what those differences are.

Defiantly not identical, but defiantly HGST He tech. The drives coming the in first batches were their enterprise drive, considering retail on them those were some really REALLY crazy deals.
 
They were ordered a day apart I think, on 2 different orders.

Edit: April 30 and May 1 were the days the orders were placed.
 
How long ago did you order them? I ordered 9 yesterday for an 8 bay config + 1 extra. They seem to be shipping from both UPS and FedEx from different locations so I'll probably get a mix of them too...

It would be great if everyone can post their drive data with smartctl so we can figure out how many different firmware revs there are for these WD easystores.
 
Yeah I have 5 of mine in an 8 bay unit now and one in my old Mac Pro. If I can get the performance where I want it, I'll relocate that data and pull that driver over.

Not going to sweat the China thing, and might order a few more if/when they go back on sale.

Are you seeing performance issues with the ones you have? They are still on sale and available right now for $179.

I'm not sure how I'd answer that. Currently I'm trying to move data from an old WHS and it's the bottleneck. But given the nature of the NAS, network performance, RAID choice, etc.. lots of variables in play aside from the speed of individual disks.

I checked earlier today and they were only for in store pickup, with none available within 250 miles. Naturally that's somehow changed in the last hour or so.
 
I'll bang the heck out of my drives when they arrive and post some performance data. Unfortunately I don't have anything to compare them against except themselves and some GoHarddrive WL 6TB 5700RPM drives. I have a DS1515+ with one SSD and 4 WL 6TBs and I'll be putting the BB 8TB drives into a QNAP TS-1635 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N55UCIX

if there are specific test you want run...let me know.. I got my 6 today and can use my hot swap bay. If not i'll probably build my zfs pull in about a week.

I can compare them to my old drives. Toshiba 2tb and 3tb

If you can, capture the s.m.a.r.t data from each drive with smartctl and post it so we can see what HW and FW revs you have. I'll post mine when I get my drives.

sure i can do that. I got half of them pulled out tonight. Not sure how anyone does this with out breaking the clips.

If you use two credit cards turned long ways it will engage both clips at the same time on each side. Push down hard and you don't have to do any prying, it will bring the tray out.
 
nice. I'll give that a try.

Just remember that the clips are offset on each side, you can see it in the PDF that Warsloth linked. The single credit card on each side works much better than individual pieces though, you don't have to pry from the front of the enclosure if you do it that way.
 
Just picked up my 2 from Best Buy earlier.

The stickers on the retail box say Made in China.

I'm currently running the Extended Test via Western Digital Lifeguard tools. They were a bit noisy at first when spinning up which sounded unusual; but they're quieter now. Not sure if the bearings had to work out some kinks or if it's typical for it to be that noisy when spinning up...

I'm confident they're the EFZX's, but how do I check before popping them out of the enclosures (it'll take at least a couple days for me to run the WD and Spinrite tests)? Coulda swore someone mentioned it but when I skimmed back through the thread I didn't see the info. When I check Device Manager and the Hard Drive Properties they're listed as WD easystore 25FB (USB).
 
Use CrystalDiskInfo to verify while inside enclosures.
 
got two of mine today, 100 percent reds, they were a lot easier to open up than i thought just used 4 pieces of a old credit card and a small screw driver. Other 2 are showing up tomorrow

Stupid UPS decided not to bring me my second two today, even though that was the scheduled date. The two that i already have are from China
 
Finished Error Scanning overnight using HD Tune Pro.

Popped them out with no problem using the linked PDF and 2 credit cards (long way; one on each side). Used a small plastic keytag to pry it out until I could use my fingers.

Currently working on cleaning up/consolidating my 2TB drives in preparation for migrating the data over to the 8TB one - it's estimating like 7.5 hours to move 1.7TB worth of data over.

Benchmarks were showing high of 185MB/s and low of 120 (or 140?) MB/s with burst of ~160MB/s.

See below for SMART info of the 1st of 2 drives. Will update with the 2nd drive's SMART info once I migrate my data and can pop it into my case.

Got all 4 of mine in my qnap ts-451, and expanded, did disk by disk replacement ( I know dont shoot me) but everything went well just took forever to do so. ~8 hours per disk. Went from 4x3tb in raid 5 to the 4x8tb :)
 
Looks like my 2 passed the 120+ hour badblocks test with not a single bit error in 32 TB of data read and written (for a total of 64 TB per disk) for each disk.

I have 2 of these 8tb reds in my NAS box. Dunno if I should install the other 2 for RAID 5. Anyone think the prices will go lower?
