They have an out, they can blame it on Covid & supply chain disruptions. Seems to be working for the rest of the tech industry at the moment.
If they advertised a certain level of performance and do not deliver on it they need to disclose that.

Nvidia will add anti-mining flags to the rest of its RTX 3000 GPU series going forward | [H]ard|Forum

WD Executives calling Nvidia for tips as we speak!
Yes, and still they have money literally thrown at them and miners are blamed for the list prices off the charts. Complex situation for sure, but i'm feeling simple. Sick of shitty politicians, corrupt cops, shitty lawyers and judges, greedy dishonest corps. many other things. Why is it so hard to get proper disciplinary action whenever laws like this are broken. I could make a list waay to long of companies that have done shady stuff like this and worse, still nothing happens.

Well this sucks. Overall the drive does seem great for the price, but the practices around this should be illegal. This info needs to be available before ordering and they need a new SKU for it. Call it the SN550S for " Slow". Or "Shittier".

I was actually looking at this as my next drive, probably next year or this holiday season if I found a good deal. May have to reconsider it.

Not sure if Samsung has yet...

Samsung HAS started using TLC in their PRO drives now, but they did it honorably, by introducing a new model, and clearly announcing its specs.

And it was about time anyway. TLC has improved to the point as of late that MLC probably isn't really necessary anymore, outside of extreme high write use cases. And those should probably be using Optane anyway...

QLC on the other hand...

I wouldn't put it past em. "Sir, do you want the slow or the shitty model?" "Is the shitty model faster than the slow?"

Even though TLC has gotten better, it is still roughly double the latency of MLC. If I had the option, I would totally buy a SLC drive for boot.

and replace with, who? They're all doing this, potentially samsung aside.
I WILL BUY NOTHING AND I WILL LIKE IT! Yeah idk, this is annoying. I generally buy Samsung anyway. For some things I go a little cheaper, but now it seems that isn't worth it.

So the company with the ssd warranty process so difficult that people have had to write guides on how to get a replacement still seems okay. i guess that’s something.

Without getting too political, because Socialism and Corporatism play on one another, and have each others' backs.
Megacorps are going to pay off political figures in order to pass laws that benefit them, meanwhile those voting "want more government" which will equate to more politicians acting like they are going to do something about the "problem" that megacorps are doing, yet are the exact ones who are allowing it to happen in the first place.

^ Doesn't the Corporatism-side of that picture sound just like every modern megacorp today pushing these kinds of illegal practices?
Even if WD gets busted for this and pays a $500,000 fine, which would be like any of us having to pay up a few dollars or quid, they will just line the pockets of politicians to pass new laws or regulations that allow them to continue these illegal, and soon-to-be legal, practices - thus, why would any politician, without morals and ethics, stop such a corporation and shut them down?

Oh well, can't have a dark cyberpunk future without corruption and megacorps. :borg:

There should be some form of consumer protection for stuff like this. Or maybe there is, but its ineffective or difficult...
Since they use that wonderful verbiage of “up to” it gives them a lot of leeway to mess around with internals as long as they stay within the values claimed in their fine print which usually does not specify a minimum.

Agree with your core concept that corporate money should stay out of governance. Disagree that socialism is the root cause. Seems like a lot of politicians railing against socialism then retreating to their sound-proof phone booths to talk to industry executives. There is corporate money in every political corner. I'm most suspicious when I see politicians trying to use culture war issues to distract people from their nefarious activities.

I suspect politicians will handle corporate issues like NAND swapping the same way they have tax fraud - ie as tax fraud goes up, the IRS budget (and consequently ability to root it out) goes down.

Most good drives have DRam and/or SLC caches to support the TLC or QLC flash.

Samsung has a bad (as in notably worse than other companies) SSD warranty process?

Well fuck.
Glad that my SN850 isn't part of the bait'n'switch (verified mine at 7500mbps) but I hate giving any company money that does this shit.
