I bought nine when they were $159 the second time around last year, never thought they would get much lower. Back then all of them were 'true' reds, now most are white label w/ the 3.3v reset issue. This issue is only a problem if you're goign to shuck them, and use them in specific enclosures. In such a case, you need to do something to prevent 3.3v power from getting to the drive or it won't spin up (this won't damage it.) The reddit link has a lot of good information, but I personally feel the tape method over the drive's contacts is the easiest and safest unless you're planning to pull the drives regularly.

Yup. Picked up 6 over the last several months at my local store, all reds.

I got three last summer. $160 each. Just ordered one..signed up with befrugal (with another email, as I had already done that, but never used it--I use ebates) to get $10 in cashback sign up bonus, in addition to 1.5% cashback, and used a 2% cash back CC. Since I'm a photographer, I can always use storage. so might buy another....

The last 4 that I purchased had one Red and 3 of the white label drives. They all are working fine as storage drives in various PCs. Plus I have extra USB3 enclosures if the one I left whole (white label) goes bad.

Reds are 7200 RPM, right? Are whites just "generic" reds @ 7200 RPM?

Shouldn't matter. REDs are for long term storage/raid. REDs have "looser" timings on reads and writes and increase the tolerence before reporting failure. Reds also assume large amounts of sequential access. So the head moves less during queuing. IOTW: It will take longer to read/write a typical red than a black. Because of this they aren't as fast as blacks, and unless you are running a mega server with a bonded pair GB output, you'll only get more heat from the PRO's.

There are two models of the Easystore 8TB external drives listed on BB's site, but the other one (WDBCKA0080HBK-NEBB) has been showing $199.99 as far as I know. This one was the WDBCKA0080HBK-NESN.

I followed the OPs link yesterday, which goes to NESN, and it showed as $189.99. Still showing same price today.
Sunday and Tuesday I checked as well, and both models were showing up as $189.99

The $150 price was a one day special. Usually the sales last a week, but the weekly sales never go below $160.

Sort of, it was a Christmas doorbuster sale in 2017 wanting to draw folks into the stores (was a 1 per limit I think though).

Got mine today via fedex. Rattle rattle goes the box. Sure enough the little plastic clip that should have been pushed in over the rubber nipples on the side to secure the drive wasn't pushed in. Who knows what if anything happened to the drive with that bouncing around and the drive able to wiggle around the whole time during shipping. It wasn't shipped in a box either which would have made me more secure in keeping it. Instead it was just in a very thin white bubble mailer. The retail box wasn't damaged but still. So I'm taking this in to exchange it. I just don't trust my data on a drive that's had something banging against it and the drive itself has been allowed to wiggle around. Hell from Thailand to the US then who knows where and how to the Dallas warehouse. No thanks I'll pass and exchange it. Mine was the white 256mb version though. Seems this is the norm now for these.

best time to buy might be end of the month when an ebay discount code lines up with a best buy sale

don't worry, they'll be back, best buy sold over 500 on ebay alone just that one day
