WD 320GB SATA HDD $140 No Rebate @ Monarch

wow its SATA!! and there is free shipping.

i wish my student loan would come in sooner.

btw has anyone ever bought a harddrive from monarch? how is their packaging for HDs.

Oooh. My SC420 HTPC is just begging me to buy one and triple its storage capacity.

$140/320GB = 43.75 cents per GB. Thats OUTSTANDING on a drive > 250GB.

As much as I dont like WD this is a very nice deal (see this thread by DL in the storage forum as to why WD likes to play marketing games instead of make standards compliant products).

Newegg has this for $145, however that includes a $25 MIR. Whereas Monarch has no rebates, just $140 out the door.

dammit... just dished out 450 for an 2005fpw... i cant afford this one now... but 43.75 cents a gig without rebates is just too sweat

nice deal, I wish I could replace my 4 160GB Spinpoints with these babies to double my RAID capacity :/

*CRY* I JUST bought 4 250gb sata's for 120 each... damnit I wish I waited. I'm tempted to return all of them and get these. AND, two came bad from newegg! One was physically damaged, the other had a bad head.

Formatted Capacity 1,320,072 MB

From monarchcomputer.com

WTF? If this is a 1.3TB drive AFTER formatting... I'm gonna buy a couple hundred of em! Petabyte RAID! Whee!

Awww man... why do I come to these forums? That’s a great deal! Hmm, pay for the car repair or buy mucho needed HD for storage so I can finally free my "tiny" Raptors for more gaming/multimedia editing space? (I think I have a collective total of 1GB free on all my partitions from the 36GB x2 Raptors) Decisions, Decisions!

Yes... and in my case it's screaming drowned out the quiet voice of reason :)

I paid my bills, so my almost empty checking account put me back in line. :D

You are not the first person to have a HD come from Newegg DOA. Check out ZipZoomFly. They are often cheaper, usually have a better selection (especially in SCSI drives) and do a MUCH better job of packing hard drives for shipping than Newegg does. ZZF uses static bags inside of foam boxes rather than bubble wrap. I really don't think Newegg knows about this problem, as you usually RMA straight to the manufacturer with hard drives (you get advance replacement that way).

Also, for this deal in particular, it is indeed excellent. Less than 50 cents/GB, no rebates, for a drive that has platters bigger than 80GB is indeed excellent. I've never bought a HD from Monarch, so I can't comment on their packing methods.

It is indeed truly unfortunate that WD doesn't get with the program on SATA-IO compliance. WD has always been a maverick though - EIDE, the Raptor, and now going their own way on SATA drives.

hm...tempting.....but Sata 2 16mb drives are comin' out soon
But if you're using this for storage, then there isn't much of a need for something with SATAII and 16mb cache.

Ooh, my hot deal made the frontpage.

Thanks Steve!

Congrats. And thanks for the heads-up. I browse monarch daily, and somehow missed this.

Bought one :) My first S-ATA drive.

They changed it... I wonder if someone at monarch reads these forums?

Well, I went for it... the deal was just too good to pass up, even if I'm not going to be using it immediately (old IC7 M/B with only 2 SATA connectors). And oh yes: DAMN YOU NOTD665... I am now out $140 (but at least I got a nice HD out of the deal). :p

Newegg's hard drive packaging methods leave much to be desired.

saw this last night over at FW
already order 4 to replace my 4 x WD2500JD drives

n00b Question...
I heard a little about the non-standerdizing, whats the deal with that?
Like what hasn't been standerdized and is it anything to worry about?

Man, I could really use 2 or 3 of these... these 160's are sitting with about 1.5GB free each, and that's only because I keep burning DVD's :p

Too bad that MRI I got today set me back $842.80 (which I now owe my parents). Oh well, I'm thinkin my vision is a WEEEE bit more important than more storage (only cause it does no good if I can't SEE whatever data I have on the drive lol)

The thread mentioned by doormat is about the new JS drives which have a 3 gbps transfer rates, but don't support other SATA-II features like NCQ.

This drive is really just a bigger version of the WD2500JD, which has been out for a long time. It's a good drive, runs quiet and cool, but is outpaced by the MaXLine III and Deskstar 7K400 in most benchmarks. Review

Or you could get a 250GB WD SATA for $110 every day, forever at NewEgg. :)
I just paid 104$ for a WD2500JD at http://www.basoncomputer.com with free fedex shippin and no rebates... that equals out to 41.6c per GB... a lil cheaper... still thinkin about picking one of these bad boys up tho... Im a WD whore

would this be any different or cost more to have it in an external drive for my lappy
ie: sata external case costing more, or runing hotter, or problems etc
chad

If i hadn't just bought a new 2500JD from ZZF a couple weeks ago for $123 i'd definitely go for this 320GB model with the larger platters.

Just wondering is there mush of a preformance boost between SATA 1.0 and SATA II?

KM

This particular drive is nearly the same speed as the WD2500 and WD2000 models. It's not really a top performer, but for this price, it's not a bad deal. I picked one up to complement my WD2000JB :)

How does Monarch pack their hard drives? Haven't ordered drives through them before.

yes, pics for those concerned :)
Too bad it wasn't a better number..... like 350?

anyways....killer deal.... at this price I'll just wait for the new gens to come out

here's another one at $0.41/gb

Yeah, much better $$ per GB (0.408 vs. 0.45 per gig) -- a pair of 250's give ya half a terabyte for $204, only $60 more than the $144 320GB drive! Sweet find dude! :D

History I've had with NewEgg packing OEM hard drives was stuffed into a layer or two of 1" bubble wrap and clear packing tape (plus the peanuts in the shipping box) -- is that any different from you guys that had DOA problems?

Guess I'll find out about Monarch's packing quality... I picked up two 250's... :p
