Says some games are starting to take advantage of higher frequency RAM and can notice FPS increase.

I can't find much on google about this. Anyone know what he's talking about or got any examples?

Currently sitting at 8gb/1600mhz, fairly old RAM. Been considering upgrading it.

Depends on how loose your interpretation is and what your standards/goals are. Technically there is an improvement with some games when you use higher-speed RAM. However you really won't notice a difference unless you actually look at the benchmarks since a .5 to 1 FPS increase is technically an increase and you did notice it when you looked at the resulting benchmarks.

Though Linux could be talking about AMD APUs and their need for high-speed RAM for better gaming performances. That's been proven.

Stick with your current RAM for now. You won't notice any sort of difference to justify the costs of upgrading, especially considering RAM's higher pricing now.

If you have no video card and use your CPU's onboard video (IGP) for gaming, then yes, faster RAM will help, in some cases quite a lot. If you have a video card, then faster RAM doesn't help at all.

Video card driver support is one of Linux's little problems, so it's not surprising that Linus would be used to seeing Linux gamers not using video cards.

for a game to specifically take advantage of faster ram, does that mean there is a special user_has_fast_ram DirectX API? Or this is more of a Mantle API direct memory access feature?

Well, Corsair's tests were done before mantle was out on 780's in sli. So, no mantle or Nvidia's DX11 optimizations, and it made a significant difference on an enthusiast class system in that one game (BF4)
