Warning: Windows 10 May Auto-Install On Your PC

Proof please? I do not buy into it just because someone says so but, then again, I do not just simply buy into what the press reports as truth.

Upgradegate: Microsoft's Upgrade Deceptions Are Undermining Windows 10 (Updated) - Thurrott.com

Basically it sounds like you'll fall into that trap if you have automatic updates turned on. Auto updates will probably schedule the update for you. Then they consider their prompt as a "we're just letting you know" as opposed to make a selection. So clicking the X is now just to clear the confirmed window versus canceling out of an action.

Untrue. i have auto updates on my machine and it still has yet to auto install Win 10. It asks Every Single time. I will concede there might be some extremely rare cases where Win 10 auto installed. However to date there has never been solid evidence provided that it is anything other than user error.

Honestly, if that is truly the case, I think someone screwed up big time. I find it highly unlikely that it would be something intentional because then they really would be opening themselves up to an investigation among other things. If someone did mess up, they probably will not be employed for much longer depending on what happened. Personally, I am looking forward to the free upgrade offer ending so we can stop talking about this and move on to other things.

I don't know if it's a fluke or not, but I still have two laptops running Windows 7 and have never received any notifications to upgrade at all. The only difference here is they both have copies of the Windows 7 family plan 3 pack Microsoft offered way back when. Whatever the reason, I'll take it and run.

Well, here's anecdotal evidence: my coworker, a web/app developer and occasional server administrator and generally very computer-savvy guy, had this happen to him over the weekend. He refused the upgrade every time, and it still upgraded without his permission. I suspect he had the default "install recommended updates the same way as important updates" setting.

I got the new popup just like the article shows tonight. Others will be bitching about this soon enough too. We have been conditioned to click the "X" since the beginning of time so it's an easy mistake to make. Very sleazy.

If windows 10 automatically installs... do you still have to agree to the eula? If it installs without agreeing to the eula, you would be free to sue microsoft in a class action lawsuit... just food for thought.

I can't imagine a company with lawyers as good as MS's haven't thought about this and are safe.

For me, running 7 Professional in Polish, the popups no longer appear. I have not done anything outside of making sure "give me recommended updates the same way..." is UNchecked on my computers.
The only odd thing I now see is a colorful banner "reserve your copy of Windows 10" where Windows Update's main window was. I have Windows Update set to forcibly install criticals each Friday before the end of the workday. So far so good.
Aside from troubles with performance on some computers, trouble with Java and Internet Banking and a few older devices not working, 10 is less of a trainwreck for me than 8 was. I am no longer scratching my eyes out. I disapprove of the subtle attempts at pushing advertising and generally trying to make money of us. We do social work, aid for the poor and disabled, and quite honestly I wish Microsoft would simply believe me when I say - I have no more money to spend on the OS.

It just happened to my wife's PC last week. She had been closing the window using the X, but it auto installed a few days ago. She freaked out when it started to install and turned off the power on the power strip lol. The win10 update rolled back to Win7.

I also had this happen to me while I was connected to a work machine via remote desktop. The notification must have come up at some time during the day while I was working. I closed the full screen remote desktop window at the end of the day and saw the "your machine will upgrade to windows 10 in 8 minutes" window.

Just had this shown to me by another tech here in the office.

I don't know what buttons to trust any more.....

Just saw that Kotaku article too; this is so shady of them that I've reached out to my immediate family that I already support to make sure they see that - I've got the GWX Registry edits on their computers and my own two HTPCs that are still 7 for WMC, and I noticed the classic KB3035583 has reappeared on two of those computers even though I have ignored it multiple times before.

I made cold full disc copies because they can pry WMC out of my lifeless hands.

This notification means your Windows 10 upgrade will occur at the time indicated, unless you select either Upgrade now or “Click here to change upgrade schedule or cancel scheduled upgrade”. If you click on OK or on the red “X”, you’re all set for the upgrade and there is nothing further to do.

What are the shill's defense now? straight from MS domain.

Saying that, MS have reverted that X thing now.... shady f#'ks

For my home and friends' machines, I used Never10 to disable the update. Works like a champ!

At work, where I am a system administrator, I simply used the registry settings documented by Microsoft, and VERY clearly explained by Gibson at the Never10 site, to set Group Policies to deny the update. Also, working like a champ!

Crickets, like always. They spend half a year swearing up and down "lol tinfoil hat" and that "Microsoft would never do that" or "lol you actually believe XYZ website that reported that? ".

Then what they swore would 'never happen' actually happens.. and they tuck tail and run.. LIKE A BITCH

Not to sound like the Internet Tough Guy, but I am actually quite calm.
There are courts for that. Yes, I am serious. I can't f** around at work, we need to - among other stuff - interview victims of child abuse within minutes to hours after an incident.
If the cops arrive escorting a child, and I won't be able to do my thing because a driver won't be available or otherwise disrupt the interview, I'm flying off the handle and will use my influences to get rid of as much MS products as possible at as many agencies I am authorised to do so.
Software companies (not just Microsoft) need to realise that people have shit to do, often times critical stuff compared to some zero-day vulnerability that they deem needs patching as I'm recording video and audio for use in court to catch a pedo.

That, or you hear *whoosh* as the goalposts shift yet again, and its"Well I don't agree with everything Microsoft does [...] my Surface Tablet is wonderful blah blah blah"

God help me I love them so.

Has it happened to you, DPI, or nvgrim, personally?
I have yet to see it happen but I will go full retard when/if it does.
Devil's advocate in me would like to remind that a lot of software vendors do bait and switch...

Well I and a lot of other people do like their Surfaces devices. And this isn't a Holy War. And what's the problem in saying that one doesn't agree with everything Microsoft does? Clearly you and others don't. It's just a Holy War to me. Some here say that don't like or need Windows and use something else. Cool. There aren't any other options for me for the things I do with my devices. Listening goes all around.

A Holly war? Here I thought XMas was 6 months away.

hasnt happened to me personally because i removed the kb5583 update despite it coming back all the time. But it did happen to my roomate, shut his computer off for the night and turned it back on with Win 10. He also told me that a lot of computers at his work had the gwx panel on them, i told him it would be a shitshow for him if they updated overnight as they are an accounting firm. Sure enough he texts me that next day saying one of the PC's there upgraded overnight. I also think its pure bullshit that MS will download an entire OS and hide it on your machine just to wait for you to accidentally hit upgrade. I had that WindowsBT folder crap on my root of C: Thanks MS for downloading a 3.5GB image on saving it on my pc without letting me know, my SSD really appreciated it. If MS would be less vague with their update information then none of that would've happened to me, but no they label the KB5583 update as a security update or whatever and thats it. If they labeled it as "This fucking stupid update will download the windows 10 image on you pc and add the GWX panel so you can upgrade at anytime" Then i would have hid it immediately.

And for all of you who are still trying to claim that this was really "user error," it's now official--Microsoft have reversed the policy:
Microsoft has u-turned over changes it made to a pop-up encouraging users to upgrade to Windows 10.

Users were angry that clicking the cross to dismiss the box meant that they had agreed to the upgrade.

Based on "customer feedback", Microsoft said it would add another notification that provided customers with "an additional opportunity for cancelling the upgrade".

...

Microsoft told the BBC it had modified the pop-up as a result of criticism: "We've added another notification that confirms the time of the scheduled upgrade and provides the customer an additional opportunity for cancelling or rescheduling the upgrade.
In other words, there's no more plausible deniability left. There's no question any more: Microsoft are knowingly tricking people into installing Windows 10. This ain't incompetence. This ain't user error, or poor UI. This is outright deception.

Ahh, so that was the Windows.BT folder I've found on a HP pavilion tx2000 with genuine Windows 7 Pro on it. That was 2 days ago.
Yeah I sympathize with the sentiment.

Are there still people claiming that Windows 10 isn't being installed without user's consent?

Christ. Well, I guess it makes sense in a world where some people support the claim that Hillary Clinton has never lied.

Any thoughts on how to get past this one?

Came up at work the other day. There isn't even a red X to click...

Yep, i wondered wtf the folder was so i looked through it and though "this looks just like a windows image, why is this here" Did some research and found hundreds of reports that MS snuck it in there with some vague update that ended up being the KB5583 update. That was the last straw for me and I dont want windows 10 anymore.

task manager and look for GWX.exe? If that is running then end that process and the window should go away. Look into the "view installed updates" section and find the update KB3035583 and uninstall it. That removes the upgrade BS. Then after you restart your pc do a search for updates and that KB3035583 update should pop up. Just right click and hide update.

Okay look at the bottom. There's added comedy value.

"Support Legal"

Legal what? EULA? or....
Thank god this is not BSD, else cutting the power wouldn't be an option as they still need the root password for powering down the friggin devils

That was the solution that we ended up doing (I skipped the task manager part and went straight to uninstalling the update, then hiding the update after doing a search for new updates (because I've found it doesn't always show up right away on the next restart)), but it was interesting that I hadn't seen that particular popup before. All the past ones I've seen were either the X to close out/cancel or the hidden-in-plain-sight cancel upgrade link, but this one had no obvious way to close it (for the average user). Hiding the KB3035583 update isn't a permanent solution as I've found out with a couple of our meeting room PCs. The update makes its way back.

Yeah its fucking retarded. Its like they disabled the hide feature on that update in hopes someone will hide it once and hopes it never comes back and then accidentally installs it again because they didn't think it would come back since you technically told it to stop showing up.

I wish he'd shown the window (or better still a video) of what's changed. If this is true, MS is screwing up, but I just left my parents place and my mother still hasn't upgraded. I think if this was really being forced, and the change he mentioned has made the old way of not installing 10 a way to install 10, she'd have upgraded to 10 a few weeks before her intended upgrade date (mid June).

It may be true, but I just don't understand why it's not affecting my mother.

My theory is that every time they tweak it and republish it as an update, it is treated as a different update, despite having the same KB number, so even if you hid the old one, it's treating it like a new one. It's sitting in the optional list on my computer with a publish date of 5/3/16. KB3035583 is definitely not only 3 weeks old.

No theory needed - that's EXACTLY what they're doing. The cat and mouse bullshit is really offputting.

LOL, I love how they're literally going, TAKE IT!!! TAKE IT DAMN YOU!!! *shoves windows 10 down our throat! WHY WON'T YOU UPDATE?!

Seriously, this is some of the most annoying shit I've seen in a while. I wonder when they'll finally stop giving away win10, so we can finally stop watching our back for their ever lurkings shadows.
