I used to own the closed headset predecessor of this model (ATH-AG1). It's a great choice for gaming (as CrazyRob mentioned, pairing a mic with a high-end headphone is a better, but vastly more expensive option, and that's the route I eventually went).
The only other real competition in the high-end gaming headset arena is the venerable Beyerdynamic MMX 300.
$199 is a good deal for this headset.

Sorry about forgetting the link. Ya I tried to go the mod mic route in the past and it was just a pita. When I tried the mod mic with an open air headphones the mic would pick the headphones up, and the directional mic on the ATH-ADG1X does not have that problem. I switch between these and the MMX 300s, and really enjoy both for different types of games.
