everything else aside, if your running on batteries, i would get a Dell Latitude C600 with dual batteries, i use this as my non gaming notebook and get like 6~7 hours from the batteries 
a good cheap card is the Dell TrueMobile 1150 (rebranded Orinoco Gold)
also www.fab-corp.com is the best place for antennas/pigtails and other fun 2.4ghz stuff... i use their black 7.4Db(i) antenna on my car with great sucess
you will probably want a GPS too... if you want to map out the AP's youve found...
