I need a new card, good for gaming. I've been out of touch with comp hardware

right now I have an ATI radeon HD 3850

other system specs:

asus p5k se mobo
intel core2duo 2.3ghz
3gb ram

Price range?

Your two reasonable options are the AMD Radeon 5770 and the nvidia GTX460.

AMD is supposed to have some new cards out in the next 1-2 months if you don't mind waiting.

What is your PSU like?

What resolution do you play at? and are you going to overclock that CPU? because I can see it becoming a bottleneck in newer games.
For this generation your best bet would be an HD5850 specially with prices coming down due to the upcoming release of the HD6000 series
This MSI 5850 is $215 after a $50 rebate. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127500&cm_re=hd_5850-_-14-127-500-_-Product

If I were you I'd wait because by next month the market is about to change significantly.

yeah what res are you playing at? an older 2.3 Core 2 duo is going to limit a higher end graphics card in general and the lower the res then the more performance that will be wasted.

what about upgrading my CPU as well? its lga775

I WOULD like to play at 1920x1200 , but I usually lower that for some games, even go all the way to 1024x768

okay how much will the prices come down by the next release?

are you saying the 5850 would not perform better?

Wow good find Lorien. At that price I don't see how someone could recommend a GTX 460. This is easily a 5850 FTW sittuation. I think the op should wait til the price goes down even further for the 5850 (just after the launch of the new 6000 series) get the 5850 and use the money saved for a higher end cpu. LGA 775 that he can overclock to 4ghz + Quad core preferably.

much better. and the prices are dropping. I have seen it go as low as 240. for 2.3mp its an awesome card. its still a lot more then the 5770 as its simply the best bang for the buck followed closely by the 460GTX. then comes the 5850 in terms of speed but not so much bang for the buck

as for your cpu I would see if you can pick up a used e8400 or something. or at least oc your current.

I'd go with a HD5770 for ~$125 or HD4870 for ~$100.

Maybe a GTX460, but I would upgrade the CPU to 3ghz or above.

Yeah, hopefully in the next few weeks other cards will start dropping further as well. A 1GB HD5850 for under $200 would be pretty good value.
