Well my friend saved up 1,200 for a gaming rig. He wants the best bang for buck parts so any suggestions would be nice. he will prolly bf2 alot so i'm guessing at least 1 gig of ram or more with a 7800gt. for hard drive space i'm guessing around 250gb or 200gb. no monitor is needed but prolly a keyboard a mouse.

edit: he said his budget changed so now its 1300.

I rebuilt my old machine (using the hard drives and optical drives - nothing else) using 1250...specs of all that I bought are in my sig

with some provisions, you could probably fit it to the way he'd want...i would go at least 2gb of RAM instead of 1, get-the-job-done ram such as valueselect would do well. a cheaper case/hdd combo (antec sonata II comes with a PSU for 90 dollars) could save you a few extra dollars. he could also go with a 3800+ processor and get the evga 7800gt from newegg that comes with the free motherboard

hope i could be of some help! :)

nice suggestion 2gb sounds really nice..for case i think he wants a pretty good looking one

Dought(spelling?) it.. The DDR500 would be usefull for running a 250Mhz divider at stock speeds. It gives a dual core more memory bandwith, gives about 1-2% performance boost I think. There was a article at AnandTech about that..

There's no sense in getting the X2 if he's just gaming. For the price of that processor, he might as well just go with the 4000+ from AMD and keep everything else the same. I dont know how good that motherboard is though.

if there's no overclocking go with something like:

a8n sli deluxe
4000+ maybe opty?
7800gt
antec case
400w 24pin power supply

2g RAM really necessary?

That Mobo is Good. It's the same one. Why not get a X2  . There is already a couple of games that support it, with more coming soon(UT2007!). Plus a X2 would greatly improve general windows performance. It would be stupid to spend over a thousand dollars and not get a dual-core.

Okay... Does the 1200 include OS, Moniter, or keyboard and mouse?

My suggestions:
Antec Case + PSU
7800GT + Free Mobo Deal(GOOD MOBO!)
G.Skill 2 GIG of RAM
250 GIG HD
AMD64 3800+ X2

Total $1100 not including shipping.

The EVGA 7800gt and mobo is an excellent deal, and all in all this is a good recommendation, except if I was gonna spend $100 bucks on a case/psu I'd go with this.
Antec Sonata II

love that case.

the system in my sig costed me like 1300.

i would recommend it, very fast and able to handle anything i throw at it :)

way more necessary than an a8n sli deluxe would be...hahah

WAY more.

well he said no mouse and keyboard, monitor or OS is needed just the pc itself only

edit: Budget change it is now 1300 not 1,200

Going quickly, I'd say..

Antec Case (case comes down to personal want/needs, just using this for now, probably want different PSU)
XFX Geforce 7800GT
MSI SLI Mobo
AMD Athlon 64 4000 I'm not sold on X2 yet for gaming, but could go that route for future-proofing.
2 GB DDR Memory
CD/DVD Burner
200 GB Seagate SATA HD

$1180 with rebate, no shipping in that, just to toss out a few more ideas. :)
I wouldn't change a thing except the processor.

Definately Get an Opteron 165 instead of the Athlon 64 4000+.
Easily overclockable to 2.4GHz or beyond
1MB Cache still
Same/similar price (Look in [H]otDeals section)
Second Core = massive improvements.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103588 It's exactly $5 more for a second core.

y go with a gt on a gaming pc at that budget?

sonata + 450 antec psu 90
evga Geforce 7800GTX 460
epoX EP-9NPA+ ultra nf4 Socket 939 105
opteron 165 340 or x2 3800 320
2gb g skill pc4000 200
nec 3450 40
maxtor diamondmax 10 200gb 85

$1320 w/ opt 165
$1300 w/ x2 3800

nice suggestions im leaning more towards the X2 3800+ because he definitely isn't overclocking
