I have been pulling my hair out on this one. My PC can not create restore points automatically or manually. This means that installing software and Windows Updates takes a very very long time as it sits and waits and waits for the restore point to be created.

When doing it manually I get the error message about Volume Shadow Copy timed out. 0x81000101

I have gone through all the steps I have seen posted on technet and Microsoft support forums. This page details these steps http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/57746-system-restore-general-troubleshooting-fix-issues.html

I even exported the registry entries for VSS from a working PC to mine with no fix.

Has anyone had any luck at fixing this? It seems to be widespred.

I recently had a laptop with a broken shadow copy service. The fix was removing a registry key left over from a visio uninstall. If the pc had visio on it, but no longer, check this key and remove the visio reference if it is there.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ContentIndex\Catalogs

Details here: http://electrovoid.wordpress.com/2011/05/23/uninstalling-visio-breaks-backup/

actually the article indicates that any program leaving an orphan key there can cause a broken VSS. So could be something else besides visio in that registry key.
