It is possible to mount a partition/drive into an empty folder.
e.g.
drive c = hdd1
drive d = hdd2
d:\temp = hdd3 (was mounted into the empty folder temp)
What happens if I reinstalled windows? I suppose I would get 3 drive letters instead of 2?
