Vista - Volume level too high

G'morning all,

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64-bit on an A8N-SLI Premium with a X-Fi XtremeMusic with the v2.15.0004 drivers. My speakers are about five years old, they're a set of Altec Lansing ADA995 5.1 that I got from Dell along with my first computer. They have no hardware controls except for a dial on the sub that controls bass level.

Vista's volume level seems to be much higher than XP.

If I listen to a song in Vista with Winamp with Winamp's volume turned up to 100%, and the Volume Mixer>Speakers slider set to 1, and Sound>Playback>Speakers>Properties>Levels>Play Control showing up as 0 (when I turn the Volume Mixer>Speakers slider up to 7, Play Control level changes to 1), the volume is uncomfortably high for me sitting about two-three feet away from the three front speakers.

Is this simply another situation where Vista's driver framework, or whatever, is showing a difference from XP (perhaps also combined with my older semi-crappy speakers)?

Or is there something I can do somewhere?

Thanks! :)
