Vista Upgrade Clean Install

I have an upgrade disc for Windows Vista as well as a legit copy of xp and I was wondering if there is any way I can do a clean install of vista without having to install xp. Is there a way to simple put in the cd and have it read it similar to the way xp upgrade discs worked? Moreover does the format option on the vista disc work as well as the xp format since it seems to take much less time?
