Vista Ultimate boots slow after new program installs?

Have had Vista Ultimate OEM 32bit from almost day one, no problems until now.
I have all updates and SP's on, so I'm up to snuff. (system 2 below)

The issue only occurs after I install a new program or game on the FIRST reboot.
After that, any reboot is smooth and fast, until I install another program. All
my programs run fine afterwards.

The hesitation occurs AFTER I login. My desktop background appears with no
icons and the hourglass, for about 30 to 40 seconds, then loads. It also takes
another 20 seconds to load my two gadgets after that.

Things I've tried...
I've checked my hard drive with Western Digtial diagnotics tools and it checked
out perfectly. No bad sectors or errors.

I've upgraded to the latest BIOS update for my Bad Axe 2. My board was
made just brfore Vista was released, so I thought that could be an issue.

The only thing I can figure is, maybe the registry is fubar or overloaded with trash.
Back in the day there were tools to trim and speed it up in XP.

I dont want to reinstall the OS, unless I really have too.

Any suggestions, tips, or things I can check?

Thanks for your help!

Kinda sounds like SuperFetch might be working and not staying in the background like it's supposed to. Maybe look it up and see what you find.

I know what SuperFetch does and is, but I'm not sure what you
mean by, "staying in the background".

Any ideas?
