Refer to xkcd's Car Model Names or this will make no sense. A better explanation of how the scores are calculated can be found in that comic's xkcd explained.

For example, the GTX 980 is +27 -18 +126 -37 -67 +60 = 91 / 6 = 15.16 / 10 = 1.52

Using the same scores that xkcd uses for car model names, let's see what scores various video cards get:

Nvidia:

GTX Titan X (+1.60) Titan is a totally negative word
GTX 980Ti (+0.65)
GTX 980 (+1.52)
GTX 970 (+1.66)
GTX 960 (+2.73)
GTX 950 (+3.86) Hey, this is going backwards
GTX 780 (+1.16)
GTX 680 (+2.23)
GTX 580 (+3.36) Nvidia's best line name ever?
GTX 550 (+5.71) Nvidia's best card name ever?
GTX 480 (+2.72)
GTX 280 (+2.23)

GTX 880 (+1.01)
GTX 380 (+3.05)
GTX 180 (+0.90)

8800 GTX (+1.72)
8800 Ultra (-1.04) only negative score I've found so far
9800 GTX+ (1.89) the + has no score but counts for dividing by 8
GTS 250 (+2.73) ha ha

GTX 1080 (+1.62)
If I had to choose the next line name, I would drop the T for another X
GXX 1080 (+4.30) see, way better
GXX 1050 (+5.70) still not as good as the almighty GTX 550

I'm tired now. I'll let an AMD fan calculate their model number scores and try to find a card name that beats the GTX 550.

R9 FURY X

8-37+5-68+8-90+126

(-0.68)

Jebus,

My favourite of the AMD cards: The HD7770 Ghz Edition

HD7770 GHZ EDITION
-44-21-58-58-58+60+27-44+83-45-21-21-18-21-81-46

(-2.28)

ouch!

Lets look at probably one of AMD's best cards: the R9 295X2

R9 295X2

8+6-74-37+55+126+6

(+1.28)

Okay...

What about...

R9 NANO

8-37-46-14-46-81

(-3.60)

YEAOCH!

For parity you'd likely have to add "Radeon" to those as well, for instance Radeon R9 Fury X.

GTX scores 4.5 by itself
Radeon scores -3.3 by itself

GTX is really what brings up all of Nvidia's scores.

If I had to choose the next line name, I would drop the T for another X
GXX 1080 (+4.30) see, way better
GXX 1050 (+5.70) still not as good as the almighty GTX 550

Try dropping the G for another X ;)

I don't think you'd have to add "Radeon" as it's kinda implied. I just assumed it was whatever people called them off-hand, nobody says "Radeon R9 Fury X", they just kinda say Fury X, or R9 Fury X. Just like nobody says "GeForce GTX 980", they just say 980 or GTX 980.

Adding Radeon would be like adding GeForce. GTX is used just like R9 or R7, as there are GT, GTS, GS etc lines as well (even if seldom or no longer used).

At that, lets see how the good old 7 series stacks up! :D

7950 GX2 = 2.82
7950 GT = 0.8

7900 GS = 1.11
7900 GT = 0.56
7900 GTX = 2.28
7900 GTO = -0.65
7900 GX2 = 2.62

7800 GT = .06
7800 GS AGP = .25
7800 GTX = 1.85
7800 GTX 512 = 1.36

7650 GS = 2.06

7600 GS = 1.83
7600 GT = 1.28

7500 LE = 1.71

7300 SE = 1.45
7300 LE = 1.4
7300 GS = 2.65
7300 GT = 2.1

7200 GS = 1.83

7100 GS = 0.5

The main point was really Nvidia's GTX designation, which now effectively is the only one they use in their core gaming oriented lines, is the huge modifier that will make all their names score better. Well really the one single letter "X" which is the highest rated single character. Hence my naming suggestion ;)

Coincidentally if you look at Nvidia's naming they really could be car names.

Personally I actually mostly use the numbers only, this includes CPUs as well, eg. 980ti, 290x, 2600k, etc. I think you'll find in practice that what things are referred to though well be highly variable with no standard.

But personally I guess I do have some bias towards "Radeon" myself as that is the first one (well 3D graphics card) I ever got for myself.

Nah, I feel you broski, the first "real" card I was ever given was a Rage 128 Pro :) Here's one for the feels (and score)

X1950 XTX = 4.78
X850 XT = 5.05
Not too shabby :p

If you want to include Radeon (-3.30), you'll have to include GeForce (-1.47). I didn't because those are categorical names (gaming vs workstation) instead of card names, it was too much work, and it seems unfair to load AMD down with such a significant handicap before even getting to the card names. :D

Previous to the R7 and R9 monikers, almost all of AMD's cards going back to the 2xxx series included the HD moniker, so all of those 7xxx series cards scores would be lower. I'm using this list as a source for AMD card names.

Oh shit, new king in town... X550. Bringin' it back old school.

X550 = 8.35

Gonna look at more NV cards to see if I can't find something just as good on their end :D

FX 5500 (+6.65) would probably be the highest on Nvidia's side from eyeballing the list on wikipedia.

Well that kind of depends on how you want to designate cards, especially older ones. For instance Geforce2 MX or just MX?

Anything after 5 would add to many negative modifiers so the high scores from either side will hae to be in earlier series. Also most letter additions to "X" will lower the score signficantly, so you need to look for the highest ratio of Xs.

Here's the list of Nvidia cards. Yeah, I don't know what to do with the GeForce2, 3 and 4 lines. That's just awkward so I am kind of ignoring them the same way I'm ignoring the ATI Rage line which predates Radeon and has two cards named 3D Rage and 3D Rage II, while the rest of the line is Rage followed by numbers and letters. Do I include Rage or not? If I don't, the XL gets an awesome score of +6.95!
