Okay, Intel ran a deal where you could get a P4 550 (3.4GHz HT), a D915PBLL, and WinXP Pro for $199. That's a helluva deal considering the chip retails for just under $300, alone.

Soooooo, now I need a new video card. I was considering the 256MB 6600, 128MB 6600GT, and the 256MB X700.

The price of the nvidias is within $10. The ATi is a few buck more. I'd be looking for a good HL2 card, as well as something that will last me for at least 2 years.

I'd be interested to hear any suggestions as to which card to get.

I would go with the BFG 6600 GT. It has a 525MHz core (vs 500MHz standard) and 1050MHz memory clock (vs. 1000MHz standard). The X700 and the 6600 will almost have the same results in HL:2 though. You really can't go wrong with either card but I would get the BFG 6600GT.

Out of those two the GT would be the better option, get a BFG brand.

Don't go with XFX. Way too many RMA's from what I've read. Go with the BFG when it's released .

Plus BFG has a lifetime warranty and it's a real one *cough*pny*cough*

well, I can't wait for one to eventually be released... dual dvi isn't a requirement, but it'd be nice.

I need something I can buy tomorrow or the day after.

Then go with the XFX. If you have a problem with it, newegg will take care of you.

okay, so I've narrowed it down:

256MB X700 DDR3
128MB 6600GT DDR3

which between the two?

The 6800Nu 128MB (or GT 128mb if u can get ur hands on it) would hands down be your best bet (assuming you are going AGP, or if you are willing to wait another 15 days or so for the 6800pcie to hit the market in full force). the 6600GT is appealing, but it will choke more at higher detail n higher reses due to the fact it is only running on 8 pixel pipelins vs the 12 or 16 of the 6800Nu or 6800GT.... spend the extra $50 and go with a 6800.

okay, as stated in my first post, I'm using a P4 550 and D915PBLL because I got both for only $199 total.... This requires that I use PCIe16.

Also, my budget is $200 -- or actually my budget is less, but I'm willing to stretch it to $200 to include the X700, if required.

So which of those two would you pick? Or, do you know of something within my range that would be better?

I can't spend $400+ on the cards you suggest.

If you can see spending the extra money I'd say go with a 6800GT. I can't see either of the two cards you listed previously doing a great job playing HL2 or lasting you two more years.

When you say X700 256mb DDR3, you mean the X700Pro, correct?

If you can find it, (I'm not entirely sure it's even widely released yet.), the X700XT is in the same price range as the X700Pro, but is only 128mb instead of 256. This hit doesn't affect preformance, but rather seems to be the faster of the two.

Either way, the 6600GT or X700XT/Pro are both great choices for Half Life 2, they will run it fine. It comes down to preference to you, really.
