Typically, I'm not the one to ask these types of questions, I usually go get all of the information myself, however, on this one, I'll defer to the expertise here.

My situation : I have a 9800 GX2 which performs ok, however, it's terrible for microstutter , additionally, it's also somewhat unstable in some games... So, I need a video card upgrade suggestion.

Budget, $350-$450.

Resolution : 1920X1200
Rig: Core i7 920 @ 4.0 Ghz, 6 GB TC DDR 1600, etc.

I'd prefer to go single card but will go dual GPU. I've been looking @ both the 4850x2 (cat drivers scare me a bit) and the GTX 280-285 or, should I be looking @ a 4870x2? or lastly, should I wait until April? :p

The prospect of DX11 doesn't really scare me off from upgrading, etc. I'm in the market now.

Any help would be appreciated.

catalyst drivers are fine, they just don't release often enough. with the late spring upgrade cycle coming up, i wouldn't spend more than 250 bucks at this point. that puts you in prime territory for a 4870 1024 or the gtx 260. either card would be better than the gx2.

260 gtx can be had for under 199 after MIR. The 55nm version also runs very very cool.

While I would normally recommend the 4950x2 (i got mine for 270.00 shipped) I would check with other people who have ATI x2 setups on the i7... I think i remember a few people having issues but I'm not sure.

I went from a 9800GX2 to two GTX 260 maxcores, definitely a difference. Waiting for the GTX295 to come back in stock though.
