Very slow internet connection though status shows connection is 'excellent'

I'm having problems regarding my wireless internet. First off, we've got two computers, one upstairs which uses a regular modem, and this one downstairs which gets its internet connection through a router upstairs.

Now, from my computer upstairs, the internet works flawlessly throughout of the day. This downstairs computer, its internet connection is...to put it mildly, crap, depending on the time of day. Speed always seems to go real slow at around the same time each day, around 2pm, around 4pm and again around 7pm. It seems to get back on track around 9-10pm, which is right now.

The funny thing is that it says connection is 'excellent' or 'very good'. Here's an example. It's the same scenario whether internet connection is actually very very slow or at normal speed.

I have no idea why, and I'd be really grateful if anyone can help me out. Tips or remedies on what I can do, because it's very frustrating!

Thank you.

Router: Edimax BR-604 WG

How the computer downstairs connected to the internet? I guessing your modem is upstairs?

Yes, my modem is upstairs. Router is upstairs as well. And we've got a small aerial upstairs to be able to connect to the downstairs computer.

You could try taking the computer upstairs and plugging it into your modem/router and see if the problem continues(wired connection). This would eliminate it to be a wireless issue if you get a decent speed.

We were connected with a wire about 2 months ago (literally a wire going throughout the house downstairs to upstairs) and we never had an internet connection problem. So this basically means there's a problem with the wireless...

Yeah most likely. Is it possible to move the router/downstairs computer closer together. To see if your connection improves?

xuerebx ... the signal strength indicates a good connection to your router, but not the transfer speed of your internet.

Meaning: you could disconnect your internet cable from the socket to your router and still have an excellent signal quality between router and the connected PCs.

I would run speedtests like: Speedtest first. Maybe you could post the result later ?

I doubt that the network card is faulty.

Hopefully someone else can come up with an idea how to trouble shoot further.

Our internet connection is a 2mbps one.

First of any WiFi is single duplex...only usefull for browsing IMHO.
Second that your signal strenght is fine, dosn't mean there isn't any interference, try using netstumbler to take a look at possible interference.

.oO(Why people think Wifi = LAN just wireles is beyond me...)

For a 2 meg connection, you're doing pretty good....esp if it's DSL.

Wireless varies for people For one, seeing the Windows signal strength indicator really means squat at to what performance you actually get.

For some people with no nearby interference and construction of the home that gives little impact on wireless....it works well.

For others, you may have neighbors nearby using wireless..same channel steps on yours. Or cordless phones for you and/or your neighbors on the same 2.4 frequency, or the construction in your home may not be friendly to wireless. Your wireless may be unsecured..and some kid next door sucking from your connection downloading his free music/porn/movies/softwarez.

Because I don't understand much about computers, so I come here seeking advice.

Thanks. We've got cordless phones and I'm quite sure our neighbours also have them. A solution which seems to have worked (for now) is removing p2p programs such as limewire, ares, utorrent etc even though they are inactive. I have no idea why they're installed seeing as my mother is over 50 and barely knows how to use a computer! My guess is that they were already installed when she bought it (it's a newish computer, bought last November).

Thanks for your help guys, fingers crossed this temporary solution is permanant.

Have you got a problem with my English? I think I'm quite fluent considering its a foreign language to me. Tee hee, I made a mistake.
