Verizon sells Tumbler to Wordpress.com

The real question is, will they bring back the porn?
No they won’t.

Pornhub would have been a better buyer if the goal is to let the brand live. I just don’t think VZW would sell it to them.

they have said they will not bring back the prawn
So it'll continue down the toilet maybe...hopefully

I honestly didn't know Tumblr was owned by Verizon - yet another strike against the site. Initially I was quite happy thinking that they sold it to the non-profit WordPress Foundation, which is (Mozilla-like) and responsible for the development of the open source WordPress software - WordPress dot ORG. However, this is not the case and they specify WordPress dot COM, which is Automattic a company that offers WordPress hosting and other tech (Gravitar etc), both for business and individuals. Not the worst company and certainly better to manage it vs Verizon, but it would have been nice if it was actually owned by the Foundation.

Still, not a bad move overall and at least Automattic (from my cursory investigation) seems to contribute back to a few open source projects. Tumblr, given its blogging nature etc... makes way more sense being owned by them in any event vs Verizon as simply another part of the conglomerate's portfolio

Why did they get rid of porn anyway?

Tumblr was acquired by Yahoo! in 2013. Since Yahoo!'s business model was mostly built around self-harm, the annihilation of creative joy and the corporate goal of establishing a huge, Yahoo!-shaped smoldering ghetto in the middle of Sunnyvale, CA, it's not surprising that Yahoo! ordered Tumblr to remove all the content that could accidentally generate traffic (while leaving Taylor Swift.)

While this is no doubt true, I think the porn thing had something to do with SESTA (the bogus "sex trafficking" bill that essentially made sites culpable for things their users post directly, as opposed to only if they didn't adhere to due diligence to investigate reported infractions - a horrible precedent). There may have been other issues as well, including some degree of rebranding and definitely Yahoo self-destruction, but I think there were other options specifically related to the adult content.

I don't know the exact details, but having followed the rise of the "Fediverse" open source, federated alternative social networking platforms, there were many new Mastodon (ie joinmastodon.org - a better-than-twitter-like microblogging platform) instances spun up in the wake of Tumblr blocking porn, including one named "Humblr" if I recall, and one called "Switter" which is specifically noted as sex-worker friendly for all the escorts and the like that used to advertise on Tumblr, Craigslist etc... before SESTA caused those sites to kick off adult content - so they basically created their own!

all of this. f**k sesta/fosta.

This thread is hilarious.
Never cared for tumblr much, not even before porn.

The actual newsworthy part of this is the price.

Tumblr costed 1.1bn $ with porn, and now without it's being sold for less than 3m $.

So, porn is worth over a billion dollars, because "The Internet is for Porn!"

And yet.......we still have no video of sex in space. This is the TRUE travesty of humanity. We’ve been in space almost 60 years, and not 1 leaked video of space porn. This is really the simple proof that mankind has never been to space.

(someone had to say it)
