Verizon President and Chief Operating Officer Denny Strigl announced today that the company is expanding its 50/20 Mbps service. The new lightning fast 50/20 package will now be available to all 10 Million Homes and Small Businesses serviced by the company.

Beginning next week, Verizon will make available to more than 10 million homes and businesses the nation's fastest consumer broadband connections, with download speeds up to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds up to 20 Mbps.

This is for FiOS customers only. I was trying to figure out how they were doing 50/20 over DSL.

and then they'll (monopolies all of em) start charging you for going that fast and using their bandwidth..

can they not get sued?

50mbs... x 1000 seconds of internet use... could be someone's argument... for the average retard they might think they are going over a 50gig cap or whatever.

its a fucked up system. now they can over 10x speeds... but umm... yeah don't use it or we'll charge you double. this isn't dialup again is it?

furthermore what if some asshole breaks into your wireless... and downloads 100 gigs of porn... and now you owe them 1k?

how will these caps work at resteraunts such? where free wireless is...

AYE - pure bullshit. I cant even get the higher speed DSL where I live.

Verizon Extends Groundbreaking 50/20 Mbps FiOS Internet Service to Entire FiOS Footprint

Yet another example of how something on the internet gets garbled with each link until it is rendered into nonsense.

Don't be so pessimistic BillParrish!

Wait!!!!: So what you are telling me is 500Gbs over DIAL UP! SWEET
/tells friends

Interesting how the email I got from verizion saying they were closing all newsgroup access except for the big 8 domains never made any headlines. They are still going to charge the same monthly fee however.

too bad I still don't have FIOS here.. my buddy has had FIOS for over two years now and he lives three streets away from me.. this is BS, I'm stuck with DSL....

they need to get moving with it already

LOL !! :D (I feel your pain, was on dialup a long time.)

I read the [H]eadline and almost ruptured myself trying to grab my checkbook and the phone and find Verizions customer order phone number and login to Verizon.net all at the same time until the little light bulb (the red warning one that flashes very fast) came on.

All I have to say is... Friggin' Comcast. *sigh*

Oh and Bill? Ars covered it, at least. Unfortunately it's one of those things were, well, what percentage of the population knows what's being talked there? No comprehension=>doesn't sell=>bad copy.

Great News!
Verizon High Speed Internet is available.

Verizon FiOS Internet service is not available for your home.
However we wanted to let you know that you qualify for Verizon
High Speed Internet. Enjoy the benefits of a high-speed
connection, plus get all the great features Verizon Online offers.

*shakes fists at Verizon*

Unfortunately the implementation of FiOS is as slow as a snall.. Otherwise Comcast would think twice before restricting customers bandwidth...

Regardless, Comcast is only Fiber out to the Node... The Node, to the Amps, to your House is all good old freaking copper... The wave of the past....

50/20 over here and loving it! Bring on the 100Mbit!!!

None exist from what I can tell. Support and sales denies the existence of any caps. Just stay away from the child porn and RIAA etc protected content. I've read the AUPs and other aggreements and try to keep up with the updates and I have not come across any language that states that there are limits to the amount of bandwidth one can consume. They do ask that you do not run full time servers, tech support and sales say it means don't do it in a commercial manner.

Aside from the fact that Verizon is a Tier 1 ISP more than likely in settlement-free peering aggreements with other Tier 1 providers, imposing caps (which don't exist currently) would be really retarded on Verizon's part. They are promoting bandwidth heavy activities. Cable doesn't, if you pay attention to cable ads they really only promote faster web surfing.

when is fios coming to Chicago when can i have a real alternative to comcast and tell they to take thair slow ass 8/1 line and shove it for 75 a month. I WANT FIBER TO THE HOME GOD DAMN IT I WANT IT NOW!

It did make the news when articles were posted about how the governer got the NY ISPs to cave and cut off the alt.* groups and whatever else they are no longer carrying. I doubt Verizon or anyone else gives a shit, it's less data for them to worry about, less bandwidth being consumed as a result. Newsgroup services have sucked from most ISPs anyway, whether it was a shitty selection of groups, censoring of the groups, craptastic retention times of two weeks or less, or in my experience a combination of most of those issues. It isn't all that newsworthy. What would be newsworthy in my opinion is if the private news providers (Giganews for example) were asked to start censoring or blocking access to groups.

Kinda takes a while to bury new fiber everywhere and rip out all the old stuff. The fact that the fiber NID for the side of your house cost about $800 if I am remembering that correctly and you have another reason it isn't taking off like a rocket.

If Time Warner even decides to cut off Giganews then I might as well go back to dial-up.

its sad and pathetic that i live in one of the very first cities that they deployed FIOS in and i still can't get it however people ALL around me have it, it's like just my block WTF! i've been trying to leave cable for a while but i guess verizon just doesn't want my business

if you think FIOS isnt taking off like a rocket, youre sadly mistaken. it's slow to upgtrade new areas, yes. but in areas where it's found, comcast feels major pressure. the fact that the hardware installed in the house being expensive is completely offset by the extremely low cost of the maintenance costs of FIOS compared to DSL. verizon is putting its entire internet and much of its financial future into FIOS, they want it to succeed more than most people realize. they want more areas covered and as soon as possible.

Had FIOS for a year here, and loving it so far. Don't know if 50/20 is justified, though, seeing how the only server that lets me max out what I have now is Microsoft. :)

Looking at the Verizon FiOS map, it appears they're installing it around my village. :(

I didn't mean customer wise. I meant deployment wise. Every phone company isn't out there right now deploying FiOS to their entire customer base.

They installed fiber cable in my apartment complex last month, but I don't think it's "ready" yet. As soon as management lets everyone know it's all set up, I'm definitely switching away from Comcast.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying if that was in fact your reference. Verizon in it's email to customers said that they would, as a provider of newsgroup services stop carrying certain groups. They went on to say that users were free to use their own private (paid-for) provider. I'm almost 98% sure that it's the same with the rest of the ISPs.

Giganews usage is safe for now. What I think might happen is some politicians might get bored from not really doing much and decide to attack the private services and try to have them policed in some form.

The real drive for isn't really for downloads. It is for IPTV. That is the next big push. Last years I tagged along to a telephone convention as it gave me time out of the office and 90% of the booths were IPTV stuff. The entire floor was talking about how much the telephone companies want to get IPTV out there and take back from comcast.

But in order to get a lot of channel and high quality they need a good amount of bandwidth to the home.

Fiber doesnt need to have a quota since the because the nature of fiber is circuit switched.

OKAY HERE YOU GO.

Those are the only caps FiOS customers have to put up with.... ;)

Yes my warm fuzzy FiOS.. I do <3 you so -

And I can't wait until you're bumped my little laser friend.

I get one choice for cable internet (Charter) and one for DSL (CenturyTel) in my area...and I don't expect to see Verizon anything in my area within my lifetime. I don't even think there's Verizon cellular service here.

Verizon FiOS does not have caps. Fiber to the home allows for massive bandwidth usage, and Verizon exploits that in their marketing. It would be pretty ironic if they capped a connection with a 15Mbps upload, which basically screams "torrent me!".

All this really does to me is make me hate TW that much more... my area is basically owned by TW, (they own all of the fiber lines,) and the premium they want to charge VZ makes it cost prohibited for them to bring FIOS.... bassards.

I'm in the same boat. When i looked it up earlier this year it was only a little in Indiana and saw nothing for Illinois anytime soon...

You guys live in the fast lane. I was stoked to get 3/512 DSL and thats coming from 2kb/non exsistent upload dial up.

That's what my connection was last year. We only have 10/1 for a month before Charter starts charging us for it, in which case we'll be slipping back to 6mb/512kb :(
