Business development head Jan-Peter Ewert says that Valve is working on a "more accurate and more useful" alternative to Steam Spy, whose sales metrics were neutered after an update was made to Steam's Web API. Steam Spy’s founder Sergey Galyonkin is responding positively to the news, as it aligns with his original goal of letting smaller developers make better decisions using sales data.

Steam Spy is a website that, until recently, offered fairly accurate data on game sales, installs, and audiences that it pulled directly from Steam. This information was useful for developers and publishers, who could gauge where audience interest was at a given time and use it to make good decisions about what to develop and how.

Honestly, this seems like dirty play by Valve. Killing an API used by a major site, than developing their own version. Valve could have either worked with the site or bought them out entirely instead of cutting them off just to make their own version. Yea, the devs behind Steam Spy are cool with it, but if Valve has the power to do something like that with no qualms, what else will they do?
