I'm in dire need of a reformat, but cannot seem to find the CD for my home-made computer that is about 5 years old. I have my key from when I bought a copy of XP years ago that is being used on this machine, but I only have the Windows installation CD from my custom-built, Cyberpower, Inc. PC. Before I reformat, will I be able to reinstall XP with the Cyberpower disc but the correct CD key for this computer?

If not, what are my other options?

As long as both copies of XP are the same (Pro or Home) your unused CD Key should work with either disk without a hitch. If the Cyberpower disk is an OEM you have a problem. If it is an OEM, check the OEM sticky at the top of the forum for your options.

If you have your cd key, you have your legal license for the software.

However, some system builders ship their systems with a windows version that's
"only" meant to run on the system it was installed on/shipped with.

The problem you may run into is that if you have a Retail copy of the CD Key and an OEM copy of the CD, then they will not work together. OEM's get a different CD vs. the Retail edition thats purchased in a store. Is that the question you are asking?
