I've recently purchased an entry level DSLR and am looking to protect the lense. In the shop I bought it from I was advised to make sure that I purchased a 'multi coated' filter.

So I'm trying to decide between a UV filter or a Skylight filter. A bit of googling seems to suggest that the Skylight filter will do the same job but will 'warm up' the images a bit by adding a bit of pink to them.

I'd be interested to hear experiences/opinions before I make a purchase.

If you only have 1 filter, the UV haze would be all I would recommend. There will be times in which you don't want an effect filter and if you only have 1 filter, you won't have that option.

And other changes to color/tint can be done judiciously in post.

My personal favorite for filters of any variety come from B+W. You'll be looking for the 010, or if you're obsessed about multicoat, the 010M. They make a full range by mm.
