I'll just put this 12" sub, tube, amp, and power supply on my stove-top just in case there's a fire. :D

You let me down, Steve.

I read the headline and expected to see people flailing at a fire with fish. :D

It's all about that bass, 'bout that bass... No fire!

No wonder I hate bass so much. It actually IS like Kryptonite to me.

Oh well. It may interfere with my pyric nature, but I can still drop heavy objects from above just fine. Anyone tries to shoot me down with a subwoofer is going to get flight lessons really quick.

I feel like that fire when some jackass with hyperbass boom boxes turned all the way up in his car drives around town. That's when I wished something like a sound homing missile existed.

Sound is putting molecules in motion.

Just so happens that deep bass sounds put them in the greatest amount of motion :D

So you get the same effect as you taking a deep breath and blowing out the candles...repeatedly, at a few dozen hz!

Or, to look at it another way, a speaker connected to a tube is an air pump. The diaphram moves backwards, which creates a void filled by air. Then the diaphram moves forwards, pushing said air down the tube. By reducing the size of the only available exit for the air, you increase the velocity. Presto, instant air movement device.

It's the same reason those people with 30KW sound systems can blow a woman's hair around or even crack a windshield.

This would be perfect for the home shopping network.

Clever...but notpratical. To put out a conventional fire you need to remove 1 of 3 things. Air fuel heat. This only disrupts the fire in a list me ted area. The fire could easily reignite as the 3 haven't been removed.

This would have been way more entertaining by demonstrating this concept using 2 things:

A bigger fire

What a bunch of bullshit. The accelerent used and amount of could probably have been blown out by breath. College kids smoking too much weed and too much time on their hands.

Wouldn't this displace oxygen? I'm curious if this could be used on a larger scale to put up a perimeter of bass around a forest fire to contain it. Keep the bass blasting until the organic matter is finished burning up in the hot zone.

Yeah... good idea blowing out a fire with your breath... If you want to stick your lips near and open flame, then by all means.

I doubt that Vietnamese student is smoking weed. I've been around a bunch of Vietnamese college students, and haven't met one that's there to party and get wasted.

Probably because they've already had their fill of communism and growing opium poppies and actually go to college in the US for an education and a job in a capitalist economy, while the US kids go to college on their parents money and come out a bunch of weed-smoking commie sympathizers that don't want to work. I suppose priorities are different when you come from a dirt poor country where just having enough food to eat or clean water to drink is considered a luxury.

1. It's a legit concept. Impractical yes, but it would scale up quite well (though it's limitations would scale as well). The issue is that when the device is turned off the fire may come back.

2. This was likely some sort of required design project. During my undergrad (mechanical engineering) I had to invent something that could both be patented and could be realistically marketed as part of my my senior design project (that was required for graduation). So no, this is not something they did because they had too much time on their hands.
