I just replaced my desktop with a laptop. I have an external LCD that I am using with the new laptop. Is there a way to boot the laptop, then close it and still be able to use the external monitor?

Windows has a setting to not put the laptop to sleep when the lid is closed.
should be in the power options area.

Check under power options. There should be a lid menu. I usually set mine to "do nothing" when lid is closed. I have a USB KB and mouse for the inputs. If I had the desk space, I would have gone this route especially if I had the space for a nice large monitor. I cannot see spending the money on another desktop build as I use the laptop most of the time. I would spend the money on a TV or monitor to handle the laptop display output.
