Just great, we slipped down the list another two notches. :(

The United States has slipped further down a global ranking of the world's most competitive economies, according to a World Economic Forum (WEF) survey released on Wednesday. The world's largest economy, which was placed 5th last year, fell two positions to the 7th spot - marking its fourth year of decline.

Obooboos plan is working bring the us down to the level of a 3rd wotrld country.

Actually we are doing that ourselves by slashing credit card debt and over populating while keep social programs in that can't support the general population when 1 in 4 Americans require them to live.

We have to bring back manufacturing here to the states. Someone explain to me how my American GM car has a throttle body made in Canada, and a center council made in Germany? We can't make this stuff here anymore?

I don't consider Made in Canada or Mexico the same as made in America. If you want to buy American, try looking at Toyota or Honda. The Camry and Accord contain over 80% American content (as of 2011).

As for why we can't make this stuff here, blame governmet over regulation and the UAW.

Simple manufacturing doesn't and won't be done here. It can be done cheaper elsewhere where the dollar goes further. You do that here prices for a lot of things go up because of our labour laws. To be competitive, more people need to take on the sciences and mathematics, and to do that the US needs an education system that isn't affordable but poorly run through high school, but outrageously expensive at the secondary education level. I hope it happens sooner rather than later.

Definitely, we talked about that in the SoapBox a lot. Socialism is the most destructive thing to an economy and a nation.

I view the government as follows. It is not the governments responsibility or primary focus to create physical jobs. It is the governments responsibility to create an environment that encourages fierce market competition and employment opportunities. We have been on a steady decline in this regard for years and its only accelerating.

Almost all of the nations above us on the list are exponentially more socialist than the US. I'm afraid there is more to the decline than just that.

Considering the base wage of a canadian autoworker is $34/hr $79 all-in (benefits, bonuses etc) compared to US $28/hr $64 all-in... it is not cheaper for them to be doing assembly here.

Stuff made in Canada is from a legacy compensation to the Canadians for all the auto stuff we export there. So you want to hardline against a legitimate trading partner.

Meanwhile you quote misleading statistics based on creative reasoning, to say the least, rewarding an adversarial trading partner.

Its not a shock we're doomed.

mainly because "manufacturing" used to require a skill set , but with todays automation it only requires pushing buttons and watching a screen as a cool machine does the work , but union workers think that they should make 50 dollars an our for pushing that button.

Funny thing is; I heard last night on TV that we are doing better. I think this source needs checked because two people from the executive office wouldn't lie to us. Would they?:)

North American Free Trade Agreement. Look it up and vote with your wallet.

American workers are too expensive and to unskilled. Too many people not educating themselves in Sciences and Mathematics.

wait till tonight when they will no doubt release a completely made up unemployment report just in time for Obama's speech which of course will be magically below 8%

NAFTA was a massive tax shift for companies to take advantage of. However, it also prompted international companies to insource into this country as well.

Very sad.

This would not have happened with McCain/Palin at the helm.

That is an uninformed statement to make, since you don't know how that outcome would have occurred since they weren't voted into office.

U.A.W.

But, but...Subaru is made here:(

pretty much anything apart from Subaru and Cadillac are made outside of the states, because it's cheaper to pay a guy in Mexico to build your Ford Mustang, than a guy in Detroit who is part of a union, and has union fees, and a pension plan...and medical.

Bingo! It's not Bush's fault and it's not Obama's fault either. However, it is the fault of a few who somehow believe that if we reduce spending in education, transportation, and communication that somehow we'll end on top.

A lot of people will tell you we spend more than anyone on Education. Um that's not entirely true. As a percentage of GDP we rank 37th in spending in education. In defense we rank #1 as a percentage of GDP. Now unless everyone is going to grow up and develop weaponry how are we to expect we are going to rank number one in competitiveness?

Here's a list of countries who spend more than we do (as percentage of GDP):

Rank Countries Amount
# 1 Cuba: 18.7%
# 2 Vanuatu: 11%
# 3 Lesotho: 10.4%
# 4 Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: 10%

# 6 Brunei: 9.1%
# 7 Mongolia: 9%
# 8 Denmark: 8.5%
# 9 Guyana: 8.4%
# 10 Malaysia: 8.1%
# 11 Cape Verde: 7.9%

Sure, blame it on the dude that couldn't clean up the biggest mess left in US history left by someone else, within just four years in office... sure

That has nothing to do with a production worker. You all talking shit that sit in front of a PC all day in the AC need to come be a UAW worker for a week. I do agree that the other country's are educated more.

I actually partially blame the media for promoting violence, drug, and stupidity as "cool" for the younger generation for the past decade or so... because hey, staying in school and learning is for losers right? lol

did you guys even watch the video or read the article? its not about which country you should start your business in, its about which country offers the highest standard of living. I can say a lot has changed in the US the last 10 years.

People are giving up their second home (cottage, boats, motorcycles) trading in their SUV for fuel efficient cars. I see people living with less luxury in the US now a lot more then in the past.

Pretty sure we wouldnt notice a difference. Government is designed in such a way that, pretty much nothing ever gets done.

brb guis, bailing out the largest corporations so that they can continue mass profits, huge bonuses, etc... Nevermind the middle man. Nevermind someone trying to start something up. Fuck that shit.

When Romney wins, jobs will come back to 'merica and businesses will give all of their employees raises. Businesses have my best interest at heart.

- Peggy Joseph votes Mitt 2012

Yup, once businessman Mitt is elected Prez he can break up the "company" that the USA has become, sell off the assets to the highest bidder, send our jobs overseas and finish the tough job of reviving our economy. Once he does that then the profits will roll right in! I can't wait for when the interstate highway system has toll booths installed everywhere, same with state highways, and our schools are all run by MegaCorp. You just know that we will all be better off when that happens.

Tax cuts for everyone! :D

Just an FYI.. most of what Slick Willy said was not made up...
