DHS is seeking new legislation from Congress giving them new powers to disable or destroy threatening drones. They say new legislation will enable them to provide protection from security risks of unmanned aircraft. Further, terrorist are using drones more and more so I understand where they are coming from and as long as it's limited to national security sites I have no problems with a new law that allows the feds to take action against a threatening drone. However, the law of unintended consequences often rears its ugly head and the next thing you know your farm next to a military installation is considered a national security site and your drones are shot out of the air.
"Terrorist groups overseas use drones to conduct attacks on the battlefield and continue to plot to use them in terrorist attacks elsewhere. This is a very serious, looming threat that we are currently unprepared to confront," the officials' testimony said. "Right now we can't test mitigation methods, determine the full scope of the threat or develop counter measures because of outdated legal restrictions."
