Upgrading from GTX 780, need opinions

Hey guys. So I'm finally needing to upgrade my GPU due to my recent monitor upgrade to 3440x1440 100hz, my old reliable 780 just cant cut it at this resolution.

So I was looking at either a GTX 1080 Ti or the RTX 2080 Ti. The 1080 Ti would probably be around $880, and the 2080 Ti being around $1400 all said and done after taxes.

Now, I do have the extra cash lying around for the 2080 Ti, but I'm afraid of these "dying" ones I've been reading about.

My question to you guys is, what would you do in my shoes? Save around $500 and just get the 1080 Ti and possibly upgrade the rest of my PC, or go with the 2080 Ti? (I'm on my 2600k @4.7ghz) I know this will be a slight bottleneck, but at this high of a resolution I feel an upgrade of the platform wouldn't be as significant as a GPU upgrade.

Any opinions on what you guys would do are welcome. Hope to hear back soon.
 
I'd look for a good deal on a gently used 1080ti, and use the savings in upgrading the rest of your machine.

The 2080ti is simultaneously the only RTX card that makes any sense, and overpriced hot garbage.
 
System upgrade plus 1080 Ti. A 1080 Ti will crush 1440p resolution.

Ryzen 7 2700x 8 cores/16 threads = $309 on Amazon
Asrock x470 Master motherboard = $99 after mail in rebate on Newegg

So your CPU speed increases by 44% for the $408.

You said $1400 for the 2080 Ti vs $880 for the 1080 Ti for a difference of $520.

So not only will your system be faster overall, but you also pocket $112 in savings vs going with the 2080 Ti.

And if you are willing to go onto Ebay you can buy NEW 1080 Ti for around $700 instead of $880. Increasing your savings from $112 to $292, while still getting an overall MUCH faster computer!

Unless you're one of those people that has to have a new video card. A 2080 is very similar in price to the cost of a new 1080Ti. The 1080Ti makes a lot more sense if you buy one used as they are often $500-550.

I have a barely used evga 1080ti ftw3 hybrid card with years of warranty left. Works great complete in box.

A cold 1080ti is a happy 1080ti. Been debating on selling it for prob 5 plus months as my 9 year old only plays fortnight on his ps4.

Buy that and upgrade your cpu/mb/ram.. hell I could sell ya all of that as well.. 6700k delid and asus maximus x hero z270 and 16gb 3600mhz ddr4.

Also look into the Vega64's if you see one going for a good price. I currently use one to drive a 3440x1440 display (w/freesync) and it rocks.
 
I'm in a similar situation to you. I'm running a 2700k at 4.5 GHz and I just bought a used 1080Ti to go with my new 1440phone 144Hz monitor. I'm going to upgrade my CPU/Mobo/RAM next year when Zen 2 releases. If I really needed to, I could get the 2700k back up to 4.8 if I had to, but I don't see the point right now.
