After I installed 16GB DDR3-1600, the MBPro now much faster but i've been testing it using CAD, 3D renderers and games - and it reboots when doing higher level computations.

I pulled out the new RAM and plugged in my original RAM for testing, and works fine.

I am using a MacBookPro8,2 Early 2011 15" Core i7 (I7-2635QM) with a pair of F3-1600C10D-16GSQ.

Did I get bad RAM?

Well, according to you it clearly seems to cause problems. Have you tried running some tests on it?

Sounds like bad ram or maybe slightly incompatible RAM. If it were a PC you could try changing the voltage and timings if the RAM passes.

Bad memory. Only 12 out of 16GB were detected. These other 2011 Macs accepted the F3-1600C10D-16GSQ kit without errors.

I have the Sandy Bridge Early Feb 2011 MBP13 (2.7 GHz) and i'm currently using a 16GB Corsair Mac Kit. Works great and when I say it, I mean it I believe you have bad ram (or something is going on with the MBP itself.) Run MemTest on it. My friend had bad ram and the built in Apple memory tester caught it. Though his computer was actually crashing versus not detecting the full amount.

Software/Database Developer and I work with VMs (Fusion Pro). I can tell you my hard disk was screaming for mercy as OSX paged in/out like mad with 8GBs installed. (I was also killing my G3 Intel SSD160GB when I had it in there, had to switch back to the 500GB HD.) Until the 500GB or high SSDs become more affordable I can't switch back. (I need lots of spare area, I was tearing my 160GB SSD apart.)

I ran memtest but 12 gigs was only detected.

Then it failed. Could it be a mis-seat? From what I understand if one of the modules is unseated - it should read 8 gigs only. Since 12 was read - one side of the RAM chips on one board could be defective?

That is really odd about the memory but then it's not like I run into these everyday (or deal with mac tech support.)

Question, did you ever mention the specifications of this ram including the MFG? Just curious

I bought them based on bulk discount rate and what I read on the feedback on Newegg.com.

Some fail, some worked. With the sheer number of Macs I've worked with so far I could tell which Mac will work and won't.

Failure to boot is really about the Mac being really picky with the RAM. Other times it appears I have faulty memory.
