Upgrade Vista to Win7 in a different location?

I want to try out Win7, but don't want to lose my Vista install (works great for me). I'd also like to avoid the pain of reinstalling all my apps, so a dual boot option is a bit out of the question. I don't have the room to ghost my drive in order to revert in case I hate Win7 or it performs poorly.

So ... is there any way to upgrade from my Vista install to Win7, but to a different location? Basically, the dual boot option, but with the added benefit of Win7 knowing about all my installed programs, etc.

Maybe it's a retarded question, but in 16 years of DIY computer building, I've never even set up a dual boot config (bad geek I suppose), so I'm not sure of the ins and outs.

Thanks.
