I'm pretty out of the loop on video cards anymore. Although my aging 7970 has stood in quite well for the past 4 yeras, I have no interest in returning to AMD anymore. But, at this point, I don't know if I should aim high (1080) or midrange (1070 / 1060).

I primarily game @ 2560 x 1440 @ 85Hz. Sometimes 3440 x 1440 @ 60Hz. But I'm not doing much with any games released recently. The most work my system gets is when I load up a heavily modded Fallout NV or something like Beam NG or Stalker COP with a ton of mods.

My system is a Z77 board with an i5 running 4600mHz. In years past I used to always just buy the TOTL card. But I'm not sure I even need to go that far any more. The biggest challenge for whatever card I'm going to run is that I run above 1080P.

So, would a GTX 1080 be a waste? Would a 1060 even be a noticeable upgrade from a 7970?

Rock,
Considering the resolutions you're running at, I'd go for the 1070 at the very least. Honestly though, I think the 1080 is your best bet. That will support your monitor at the proper resolution. This means that when you do come across a current title that requires it, you're system will be ready to go.

Thanks,

Silver

I go with GTX 1080 since it will provide better experience in 4k and in 1440p. Kinda worry about CPU bottleneck but since you overclock it to 4.6Ghz, it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
