My current system (all stock clocks)
E8400
Visiontek 4850
P5Q 'vanilla' mobo
4GB OCZ Platinum DDR1000
Earthwatts 500W PSU
Vista x86.
22" HP monitor 1680x1050

I built this system to be my HPTC and gaming machine. The games I play now are just WoW and some racing sims. I will however be purchasing Warhammer soon. I can upgrade my 4850 to a 4870 for around 50 bucks and am wondering if its worth doin so playing at the 1680x1050 resolutions. Or should I save the money and work on some overclocking. Opinions?

well, i think the 4850 is good for that resolution, but if you can upgrade for 50 bucks then id do it for sure.

Any worries about my PSU being too small or is that more than adequate? I will prolly still want to OC my CPU since I've read is so easy to do with the e8400. Prolly only push it to 3.6ghz.

I think that 500w should still be good with that, however most anything I base that off of is on 550w's, so definitely google the wattage draw of the 4870.

If you look at the difference in price of the 4850 and the 4870, you'll be saving enough to get you and a date a nice full course meal at Red Lobster or some other cool place. I'd do it especially if you have someone you can take out to eat hahaha.

Your PSU is plenty for your rig, even with a 4870 and while overclocked.

i just built a very similar rig to what you listed recently for a friend to play warhammer

e8400
p5q pro
4870
4gb g.skill pc6400

runs warhammer at 1680x1050 max everything with 4xaa no issues

he is running on a bfg es800 like me, so no power issues either

The 4870 is maybe 20% - 30% faster. Enough to notice the difference, but it won't be significant.

For 50$ I would switch, if not then head over to techpowerup for easy pencil mod for the 4850, you can get the card very near 4870 speeds that way. 3rd party cooling is recomended though :)
