Just thought I'd drop an information nugget incase it can help someone else.

Story format: I've been using a Sony DW-D22A (BYS2 firmware) since 2004 and have had no real issues to speak of. However I don't really burn a lot of discs and have stretched a spindle of Fujifilm media quite a long way. Recently a friend gave me a few Memorex DVDs to burn some stuff for her and the Gnome CD/DVD Creator was throwing up a non-descript error message. I just used some of my Fujifilm discs and burned with no issues and just declared the Maxell stuff to be "naughty." Unfortunately that burn request used the last of my Fujifilm media so I went and bought another spindle only to receive the same type of error message with this batch. Hunting around on the intartubes lead me to a firmware update (links below.) Figure if I brick the drive it's not a big loss. Heck, drives cost almost as much as a spindle of media. I download the .bin and liteon flash utility and give it ago (in windows). Reboot back into linux and try the process again and it was successful. yay!

Summary:
Drive: Sony DW-D22A BYS2
Error: Media not supported (FujiFilm DVD-R)
Fix: Flash firmware to BYS3
