I'm looking for info on how the unreal engine came to be. I briefly read somewhere that a guy worked on it for years in his basement programming. If anyone has any links of articles about who programmed it, please do share. Thanks.

I had to quote that 1998 article lol:

"3D Realms dumped the Quake II engine in favor of Unreal for its upcoming release Duke Nukem Forever."

Man, that was a long time ago... When 3DRealms first licenced the QuakeII engine (1997?), one of its major selling points was "Coloured Lights!" :D

Heh, yeah. I remember that. :p
Did glQuake have that, or was it just "lights" that set it apart?
(Either way, it looked impressive compared to straight quake.)

Nice links everyone. Thanks. They are good reads when you are bored at work.

i know it introduced AF, it was like "hey, at first the wall was a bunch of squares, but it says something?!"

I don't think it had AF... I'm pretty sure that's a more recent development. It was probably bilinear filtering (possibly trilinear as well, but I'm not sure).
