Digital Key Release v1.0 is upon up. Soon you will likely be able to use your smartphone, to unlock and start your car if you have Near Field Communication enabled, and of course with the correct software. With this tech, you would also be able to "digitally loan" someone your car keys as well. Audi,General Motors, and BMW are giving this technology support. The Car Connectivity Consortium is behind Digital Key, and has a whole host of open standard technologies that they are pressing forward with.


Given extensive interest from automotive and smartphone manufacturers as well as the supplier ecosystem, CCC has begun work on the Digital Key Release 2.0 specification. This specification is under development in collaboration between CCC’s charter member companies including Apple, Audi, BMW, General Motors, HYUNDAI, LG Electronics, Panasonic, Samsung, and Volkswagen, and core members including ALPS ELECTRIC, Continental Automotive GmbH, DENSO, Gemalto, NXP, and Qualcomm Incorporated.

Given the lack of scrutiny car software undergoes, and how novel a lot of hacks end up being, can't we just make it a 12 inch long suppository to help us prepare for our cars being stolen?

Yeah, I have a 2018 Ford Escape, and the smartphone app works great. I actually use it all of the time.

You can lock, unlock, and remote start your car with FordPass, you can't use your phone as a proximity key.
 
People Are literally hacking gm OnStar systems and unlocking and looting cars.

Not to mention remotely shutting down Chrysler's.

I do not want an internet enabled car.

I'm flabbergasted that people would.

Technology and laziness are a dangerous combination.
 
Pretty badass, looking forward to this. People need to stop with this "OMFGZORZ GOVERNMENT IS SPYING ON US AND CONTROLLING OUR EVERY MOVE"

Turn AC/Heater on
Pop the frunk
Open the trunk
Unlock / Lock the doors
Start the car
Toggle Valet mode
Flash the lights
Honk the horn

Soon summon my car to me
 
My next car will use it's self-driving sensor suite to identify me by my manly good looks and imperious swagger.
It will also decide whether I'm sober enough to drive by how I approach it.

Keys? How totally last century. My stuff knows who I am.
 
I'd only dig it due to many recent car key fobs being so obnoxiously large. My BMW fob is TrumpHueg(tm), and since a fob is like $400 I also got a protector for it, which just makes it bigger. I can't even keep it in my pants pocket with other things.

Theres a silver lined downside up module you put your keys inside and sit on.
This also acts as a suppository so you know what its like if your car gets stolen.
Be prepared, with a silver lining!
 
Chevy has this today except for the digital key lending. They have an app for it that I refuse to install. Believe it goes through onstar which I also disabled ;)

It was this type of technology that led to 42 (or 46) cars being stolen last year from our neighborhood. Matter of fact, BMW was also promoting that technology as well. Hmmm.

Actually your Tesla uses a proprietary IP to do that however, not Digital Key. Digital Key is an open standard.

Wow, that's amazing. Just like the $20,000 Fiat/Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles that have been able to do this since 2013 via the uConnect app. The app will also display your vehicle's location on a Google Earth map. Glad to see Tesla keeping up with the low end.
 
What is the point of this app? It is just a security risk. I lock/unlock, pop the trunk, start the car and open close the windows already with my key fob. I can do it from anywhere in my house. My car is 4 years old too.

I've had this on my Ram since 2013.

Another cool feature of Uconnect is "Send to". I can search for places on my phone and send the address info to my truck. Truck doesn't even need to be running or on. The sent to request will be waiting there when I start the truck.
 
LOL my 2010 Corolla doesn't even have cruse control. I even had to add a remote start, keyless entry and remote trunk release after the fact. Can't hack my car if there is nothing to hack.
 
I could have had remote start on my new Fiesta. I could not think of a reason to have that, so I passed. ;)
 
People in a tech enthusiast forum complaining about new tech.

I wonder how all of these car thevies got by back in the day without all of this new tech? A real head-scratcher, I tell ya.

So you can do all this car stuff when you're not in your car. Then you can get into the car and put your life into the cars icy hands while you're traveling in ~2ton of metal at 70mph, because then there's more important things to do than car stuff. o_O

Not picking on you directly, just yelling at the clouds I guess. ;)

I'm usually the person accusing too much tinfoil or extremist viewpoints, but that was just weird. No one was accusing the government - legit concerns of hacking a piece of software were being discussed. Software that seems extremely ill advised at that.
 
It is not a tin foil thing by any means. Cars have been and continue to be hacked. The more paths you give a hacker, the more chances a hack will be successful.

This is mostly due to the "shiny, sparkly" people. You know the ones. They get all excited about any new tech and implement it without giving it a second thought and fail to understand why it is breeched or fails because they were too enamored with the "sparkly".
