Ungrade from HD 5870 for around 250$

Hi guys,
recently switched from 19"(1024x1280) to 24"(1920x1200) and started feeling that I need upgrade(XFX Radeon HD 5870 1GB Cypress XT), so what you can suggest to me?
p.s. I'm some kind of ATI adept(10 years with them:D) needless to say what I prefer.
 
Good look getting your hands on a AMD video card atm. I want one for my wife and they are gone. for 250 you could get a nice 670/680/760/770!
 
I just upgraded from a 5870, and for me a r280x (aka 7970) gave a noticeable improvement. A 7950 would be a minimum, anything less didn't feel like much of an upgrade for me (1gb vram limit not withstanding). Apparently a 290 is about the same noise as a reference 5870, so there is also that possibility if you are used to it already.

As said, finding a card is the biggest challenge right now, they are sold out everywhere.
 
The new Radeons are priced at:

$199 for Radeon 270x (premium heatsink versions around $210-$230)
$299 for Radeon 280x (aka 7970)

They don't have anything at $250.

They're both priced competitively for performance compared to Geforce cards, imo. But I haven't done much reading on the 270x. From a glance, it looks to be slightly faster than a 7870, which is good of course.

You will have a hard time finding a 280x in stock, as they're a hot pancake right now.
The 270x is plentiful from what I see.
 
I wish you luck since pretty much any card worth upgrading to ie. 7950, 7970, r9 280x are pretty much all sold out everywhere. That being said, I've read great things about nvidia's lineup lately. Really curious to see what you go with so please update :)
 
280x if you are sticking to single card. Wait a few days or a week and you'll have no problem finding one. I am in the process of upgrading our family PC from a 5870 also, I went with 7850 crossfire, waiting for the newegg shipment that comes tomorrow. Got them for $109 each after MIR, so that is an option for you if you don't mind dual GPU issues, and have the proper case for it.
 
its amazing how good the 5870 was..

the 7950 (or higher) is really the only card worth upgrading too

everything lower is about the same performance as the 5870

Agreed. I'm looking to upgrade from a 5850 and have been looking to get one of those, but 770 is bit pricier than $250.

It kinda sucks that gpu technology moves this slow. I bought my 5870 January of 2010 for 420 $ (before checking I thought it was like 300..) trying to wait for a product around 300 that really wipes the floor with the 5870..
 
I went to the 760 and it has been great for around that price.

I played Batman Arkham origins with everything set to max and didn't need to OC yet.

The 7970/280x at $300 will wipe the floor with a 5870, no question. Especially if you get a good overclocker.
 
just wait till mining ltc sucks again and you can get a used 290 for 250 or 300
 
thanks for so many quick replies! About stocking issue - I don't live in USA, so all cards, as I know, are available, but prices for some not the same.
As i see you mostly suggesting 280x series and they are from 330 to 570$ here
HD 7950: 250(XFX)-300(ASUS)$ worth it?
HD 7970 starting from ~360$(i think too high)
270x from 180$,
so can you specify best models in each category?
About Crossfire setup - I heard many games have heavy fps drops with crossfire and some don't even support it from the start, don't know true or not.
About used market - in our region it's not worth it.
 
Get an MSI Twin Frozr III Radeon 7950 if you can. Yes, it's worth it.
Second choice would be XFX Radeon 7950 DD

Third choice would be Radeon 270x

Twin Frozr III - 330$ in this case maybe better to look at 280x?
XFX Radeon 7950 DD - only found this one(XFX Radeon HD 7950 800Mhz PCI-E 3.0 3072Mb 5000Mhz 384 bit DVI HDMI HDCP Double Dissipation) and it's 250$
and 270x someone suggested this(MSI R9 270X GAMING 2G, AMD Radeon, R9 270X, PCI-E, 2048Mb, GDDR5, 2xDVI, HDMI, DP, 256-bit, OverClock Edition, Retail) - 225$ will do?

Blame consoles! However, I think that it's a good thing these software developers are forced to maximize the potential of aging hardware. It's much easier on our wallets when we don't HAVE to upgrade annually just to keep up.
 
IIRC, 270x is a rebrand of 7870ghz. So 7950 would be the better card, even with new drivers for "new" cards.

OP a HD 7950 is 5 - 7% slower than HD 7970 / R9 280X at the same clocks. HD 7950(1 ghz) matches HD 7970(925 mhz). a HD 7950 at average overclocks of 1125 mhz matches HD 7970 Ghz(1050 mhz)

HD 7950 will double the perf over a HD 5870. its an absolute beast. the XFX DD cooler is a bit loud and not so effective. given that R9 280X is $360 in your region i would advise the HD 7950 asus dc2 if you can find one for $280 - $300. the asus dc2 is easily the quietest and best cooler.

haha, guys, I think I misjudged availability of all card in this period of the year:eek:I was late for a day and now XFX HD 7950 DD costs 330$ like all 7950 and 280x are all sold out despite of their price(around 500$).
 
so after long time waiting and searching i changed budget and found ASUS R9 280X DIRECT CU II T V2(R9280X-DC2T-3GD5-V2)? so what you think about it? I even can't find any reviews of it, where are only V1 reviews.

Since i started my search month ago, market hugely changed and it's not really about Christmas it's all about "miners", i heard some crazy stories from sellers about guy who reserved and bought all batch 280х cards(60!) at a time. So prices are up and even so, cards(exactly radeons 7950 and 280x) sold like hot cakes and it really hard to even find them.
